Amateur Golfer Nick Dunlap Makes History with Stunning PGA Tour Victory

In a moment that will be etched in golf history, 20-year-old amateur Nick Dunlap defied the odds and claimed victory at The American Express PGA Tour event, becoming the first amateur to win on the Tour in 33 years.

Dunlap, a sophomore at the University of Alabama and the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, entered the final round with a three-shot lead but faced fierce competition from seasoned professionals, including world No. 6 Patrick Cantlay and Tour veteran Justin Thomas. Despite the pressure, Dunlap held his nerve, sinking a crucial six-foot par putt on the 18th hole to secure a one-stroke victory with a final score of 29-under par.

'I still can't believe it happened,' an emotional Dunlap said after the round. 'To have my family here, my teammates supporting me—it's a dream come true.'

The last amateur to win a PGA Tour event was Phil Mickelson in 1991 at the Northern Telecom Open. Unlike Mickelson, however, Dunlap was unable to claim the $1.5 million winner’s prize due to his amateur status. Instead, the payout went to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Dunlap’s victory has sparked speculation about his future. As a top-ranked amateur, he now faces a pivotal decision: remain at Alabama to defend his NCAA title or turn professional and accept immediate PGA Tour membership.

'Whatever he chooses, this kid is special,' said Alabama head coach Jay Seawell. 'He’s got the talent and the mindset to be one of the greats.'

With this win, Dunlap joins an elite group of players, including Tiger Woods, to win both the U.S. Amateur and a PGA Tour event before turning 21. The golf world will be watching closely to see what he does next.
