Amanda Nunes Announces Comeback: 'The Lioness' Returns to UFC

Las Vegas, NV – April 13, 2025 – In a shocking turn of events, former UFC two-division champion Amanda Nunes has announced her return to mixed martial arts, ending her retirement after nearly two years away from the sport.

Nunes (22-5), widely regarded as the greatest female fighter of all time, retired in June 2023 after a dominant title defense against Irene Aldana at UFC 289. However, in an exclusive interview with ESPN, 'The Lioness' revealed that the competitive fire never truly left her.

'I’ve had time to rest, spend time with my family, and reflect,' Nunes said. 'But the fighter in me isn’t done yet. I still have more to give, and I want to reclaim what’s mine.'

UFC President Dana White confirmed that Nunes will receive an immediate title shot upon her return, though it remains unclear whether she will compete at bantamweight (135 lbs) or featherweight (145 lbs). Current bantamweight champion Julianna Peña, who handed Nunes her last loss in 2021 before losing the rematch, has already responded on social media:

'Guess who’s back for another beating? Welcome back, Amanda. Let’s settle this once and for all.'

Meanwhile, featherweight champion Kayla Harrison, who recently signed with the UFC, has also expressed interest in facing Nunes in a superfight.
