Local police in Franklin, Tennessee, are pursuing an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding a hidden GoPro camera used to record women inside of a sports training facility's changing and restroom area.
The facility, Premier Athletics, offers a range of athletic programs to young women, with a focus on cheerleading, gymnastics and tumbling lessons. It is located roughly 20 miles south of Nashville.
Officers at the Franklin Police Department released an update regarding the inquiry currently underway on Thursday, one week after Premier Athletics' general manager discovered the camera and turned it over to the law enforcement agency. Police initially announced their investigation into the incident on Tuesday. At the time, authorities noted that the recording device was "linked to an employee of the business." The male suspect has not been named publicly.
After evaluating the camera's footage, detectives assigned to the investigation were able to identify 47 of 60 women seen on video and are continuing to review recordings as they work to distinguish the remaining individuals. A majority of the women identified are younger than 18, according to Franklin Police's most recent update, and their guardians have been contacted. Detectives say two of the women who appeared in recordings were partially undressed.
Footage recorded inside the Premier Athletics facility suggests that the individual responsible for operating the hidden device was "intermittently staging the camera to capture video in the restroom since September," police said. Evidence collected so far during the investigation indicates that the suspect did not target other private sections of the sports training establishment.
"The girls changing and restroom at the center of this investigation is located inside the Premier Athletics suite," authorities noted in the police update released Thursday. "There is no current evidence to suggest that other restrooms or private areas in the multi-tenant facility were compromised."
The police department seized further evidence in addition to the GoPro camera itself, although authorities did not provide further details about the nature of those items. The department said that detectives "expect to file multiple charges" against the suspect once all evidence is reviewed. Officers plan to formally identify the suspect and release more information about the case when charges are issued.
"The placement of a camera in such a private place is a violation of trust in its most extreme form. This is terribly upsetting to parents and their children, and it is just as troubling to us," police said in Thursday's. update. "The Department is working diligently to safeguard sensitive images, to help victims and their families cope, and to prepare a solid criminal case for the courtroom."
Newsweek reached out to the Franklin Police Department for further comment but did not receive a reply in time for publication.

A woman has shared the sneaky way a man was trying to record her getting undressed in a changing room in a bid to help others stay safe.
Macey Leap – who goes by the username @maceyyall on TikTok – shared a video she filmed inside a clothes store changing cubicle.
While the change room was private, it had a gap between the floor and the start of the partition, which ordinarily wouldn’t expose anything except their feet.
But as Macey’s video shows, the man in the stall next to hers had used this gap to try to record her getting undressed, positioning his camera phone between his feet on the floor to point inside her cubicle and film her getting undressed.
Macey used her phone to record the breech of privacy, writing: “A man attempting to record me changing in the dressing room.”
Luckily, it appears the US teen spotted it before she had taken her clothes off, as she can be seen wearing a brown mini skirt and white blouse in the mirror with her shoes at her feet. There’s also a pile of clothes beside them.
The creepy video has been viewed almost 16 million times since it was shared on November 4, with Macey urging people to “be safe”.
Despite clearly resonating with fellow social media users, being liked 2.6 million times and shared 46,000 times, Macey has turned off comments after receiving a stream of nasty remarks.
It’s not the first time a camera has been used to spy on someone. Last year, chilling footage emerged of a hacker taunting an eight-year-old girl through the smart security camera in her bedroom .
Mum Ashley LeMay shared the video after reporting the hair-raising incident to the police, reports NBC.
In it, a cyber crook speaks to daughter Alyssa through the gadget. He claims to be Santa Claus and encourages her to smash her TV.
Even though his covert filming revealed she wasn’t cheating on him, Paul Lewis, 46, continued to record partner Ann.
Eventually Ann found 29 videos of herself shot in the bedroom when the camera was moved to the kitchen.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Video from a teenager's bedroom may be the key to a sex abuse case against a former Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy.
A Fresno teenager came to her dad in 2015 with one of the worst things a father can hear from his daughter.
"She told me, she goes 'Dad, Papa's been touching me,'" the father testified.
We are not showing his face to avoid identifying the alleged victim, but "Papa" was his stepfather, Rex Garcia, who had recently retired from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
The girl says she woke up with two layers of clothes removed, and Garcia just left the room when she caught him in the act.
The father says he did not think anyone would believe the girl's story, so he bought a wireless video camera and set it up in her room. The first night it was there, Garcia came back to the room and lifted her blanket.
"He came in and he sat on the edge of the bed and then got up and walked out," the father said.
We are not showing the full video, but prosecutors say it amounts to sexual abuse. And they say Garcia did something similar on a couple more nights before the father delivered his evidence to police.
Officers arrested Garcia a little while later.
His defense attorney denies the video shows anything more than a vigilant grandfather figure checking on a girl in her sleep.
"Look at those videos," Antonio Alvarez said. "Doesn't show anything nefarious. Nothing at all."
Alvarez also says the girl has an issue with lying.
But prosecutors say the video backs her up, and the girl reported inappropriate touching by Garcia dating back years, even during his time as a sheriff's deputy.
"A former law enforcement officer for the Fresno sheriff's department and the Fresno Police Department betrayed this family by molesting name redacted," said prosecutor Amy Freeman.
Garcia faces up to 16 years in prison if he is convicted.
The trial should last about a week.
