Adam Sandler Honored with Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Comedian and actor Adam Sandler was awarded the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in a star-studded ceremony at the Kennedy Center last night, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential entertainers of his generation.

Sandler, 58, best known for his roles in Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, and Uncut Gems, was celebrated for his decades-long career in comedy, film, and music. The event featured tributes from longtime collaborators, including Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, and Jennifer Aniston, who praised Sandler’s unique brand of humor and generosity.

'Adam makes everyone around him better—funnier, happier, just better,' Aniston said during her speech. 'And he does it all while wearing basketball shorts.'

Sandler, often associated with his goofy, man-child characters in early hits like Billy Madison and Big Daddy, has earned critical acclaim in recent years for dramatic performances in films like Hustle (2022) and Spaceman (2024). Yet, he remains beloved for his signature silly songs and loyal fanbase.

In his acceptance speech, Sandler joked, 'Mark Twain was hilarious, but did he ever write a song about lunch ladies or Thanksgiving turkeys? I don’t think so.' He then grew emotional, thanking his family, friends, and fans.

The Mark Twain Prize, awarded annually since 1998, recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on American humor. Past recipients include Richard Pryor, Tina Fey, and Dave Chappelle.

Sandler’s latest project, Hubie’s Halloween 2, is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.
