I do like the comforter to be warm for the winter months, obviously, but I would prefer something that can be adapted year round - and we live in the south. The trick is to be weighty - not fluffy and light. That's nice and weighty, and warm when placed together. Avoid anything that's fleece/polyester. That will be light. Any filled comforter (regardless of what it's filled with) is going to be warmer the heavier it gets.
This might be okay in winter but it won't be suitable for weight in summer. The whole design of something that's filled with down or a synthetic alternative to down is based on the idea that the fluffiness insulates better with less weight. Having a sturdy cotton duvet cover on it will make it a little heavier I suppose. Another trick: Even you have queen or smaller bed, get the king size anyway. That'll make it heavier, as well as wider for more coverage. Given that I want an all natural comforter next time I buy one (I can't stand synthetics but I've put up with one from TJ Max for over a decade now)... I realized it will probably have to be a wool filled comforter with a duvet cover on top. The disadvantages of down are too many for me: dust mites, keeps moisture, prone to mold...and no weight.
