Portage Hike and Bike Trail Great secluded and low-traffic local trail While this trail crosses a few low-traffic back roads here and there, overall it's a secluded and scenic ride.
You'll pop in and out of nature and small town civilization, bit that's kind of par for the course on rail trails. While nothing spectacular, you do get a few extras on this trail such as Towner's Woods park, where you can park and the short hikes are all worth it. The trail also gets you really close to the trail near downtown Kent (not sure of the name but it starts at Tannery Park). If you are willing to do a bit of street riding you can connect to that trail, and follow it out to the Freedom Trail near Middlebury Road. That will take you all the way out beyond Tallmadge. And the nearby Franklin Connector section (not near rails) is a good ride and will connect you to the Summit Bike & Hike Trail. Most will want to drive to get to Franklin Connector, but it's reachable by bike for sure. Now that the Portage has been fully paved, it really makes it a great casual ride. Very little in the way of elevation, and as mentioned very little cross-street traffic to worry about.
For what it is — a great local bike trail — it's top notch. County Line Trail (OH) Wayne County's Railfan Hotspot Rails to Trails of Wayne County deserves to be commended for their decision to convert the old Erie Lackawanna right of way into a trail - it parallels the CSX ex-B&O mainline for much of its length between Creston and Rittman. Since I found the trail in late 2013, I have visited it many times and seen countless trains, but one really stands out. On August 8th, 2016, while I was sitting in my car at the Kauffman Avenue parking lot, a CSX freight went past me... with Norfolk Southern SD70ACe 1071 (Central of New Jersey heritage) trailing the leading CSX diesel! On two occasions, I spent an entire day in Sterling watching and recording trains on my Sony HandyCam. Over in Rittman, there is a restaurant in the old Erie depot at the east end of the trail. They serve good food, but they aren't open past 3pm (2pm on Saturday). If you're a railfan from Wayne or Medina County, I recommend that you visit this trail!
Little Miami Scenic Trail Best trail in US. My wife and I have ridden this entire trail many times in segments as well as connecting trails. All trails are paved. Trail follows Little Miami River, and is generally tree lined so can ride it year round. It is very pretty. So I will divide this into 3 sections south middle and north. SOUTH segment--Trail has been extended to about 3 miles south of the golf center where it ends roughly east across the river from Lunken airport. Stay at the Mairimont Best Western if doing south section. From the hotel Trail is 1 mile away down 50 west. You can ride to it or drive down and park at the new 50 West brew pub. South segment is busiest segment. Ride north by Milford to Loveland which is a very cool bike friendly town. Can eat at Julian's or Paxton's both on the trail in Loveland. Bike shop in Loveland too. But no place to stay in Loveland. North of Loveland is prettiest part of trail with very few road crossings. We go up to about Lebanon then go back south.
MIDDLE segment--if doing middle section can Stay in Lebanon at Hardy's B & B or the Golden Lamb hotel. Lebanon is a very cool town too. You have to take the Lebanon trail 8 miles to connect to Little Miami trail. Lebanon trail has a BIG hill on the way back. Or drive to the Little Miami Trail and park at Lebanon trail head. If go south from there can go to Loveland. Going north go through Morrow then on to Oregonia. There can eat at Little River Bar-- a bikers bar but very cool. Continue north by Waynsville through Spring Valley to Xenia. Not much in Xenia. Waynsville is 1 mile off the trail but a cool town and can get something to eat there too. Middle segment is not heavily used. In Xenia can get the Ohio to Erie Trail to go on to Columbus. NORTH segment--Here can stay at Yellow Springs at Morgan House B&B or at a new hotel Mills Park Hotel. Several places to eat and drink in town. Yellow Springs is a Very quirky cool bike friendly college town. Trail here is new and wide. Not very busy either.
Going south from Yellow Springs takes you to Xenia. Can go as far south as you want. Or pick up Ohio to Erie trail in Xenia towards Columbus. Can turn around at Cedarville another cool town. In Cederville can stay at Hearthstone Inn. Going north from Yellow Springs you go through Springfield an old town that has seen better days. A little sketchy through this town. Then can go north all the way to Urbana. My son and I use this trail when I come home to see my mom in Ottawa Hills. Perfect for a brisk walk any time of the year. The residents/walkers/joggers/bikers are very courteous of one another. Anyone living along this trail are really blessed to have it. Blacklick Creek Greenway Trail Over all I l love this trail except for one minor problem . Why wont Norfolk Virginia Give the city of Columbus that stretch of trail at Hines and Tussing so they can finish the Trail proper? It makes no sense what so ever !!! Complete that area and the trail will be epic Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail
I rode this section and completed the Northern most section of the Ohio to Erie Trail. In Cleveland, the trail is mostly on busy city streets, coexisting with vehicles. Twice I tried to post the turn-by-turn pictures, but for some reason the Northern end pictures in Cleveland haven’t been accepted. The trail was mostly scenic, until it entered Cleveland. Drew Carey might think Cleveland is the best thing since sliced bread, but the view from this trail had a lot of scrap yards, rock quarries, sewage plants, and vacant buildings with their windows broke out. In other words, a lot of urban decay. I don’t ever plan to go back. The Ohio to Erie Trail was supposed to go to Lake Erie, the “Erie” in the name. But this trail does not actually end at Lake Erie; it ends about half a mile South on the North end of the Carter Road vertical lift bridge. I’m not going to risk riding on the busy streets of downtown Cleveland and end up like Andrew Gast-dead inside someone’s windshield.
There are too many other safe trails that are not on public roadways. Tecumseh Trail Multi-use Pathway ** Now extends West to Harzell Rd. Run this many times, it's a nice little out of the way path. Never crowded, even the parts where you are on the road are mostly clear because the roadway parallels Rt 36. Nice bridge near Gettysburg. Hope this one continues to grow in both directions. North Olmsted Walking & Bike Trail It's beautiful in the spring beautiful in the autumn beautiful in summer you will always find deer the colors of the leaves amazing in Autumn I always pick different kinds of flowers I have seen different kinds of birds 3 miles down 3 miles up great exercise on a bike or walking. I love it I love it.💕 Great Connection to the Kokosing GAP Trail This short trail connects the Heart of Ohio trail to the Kokosing GAP trail in Mount Vernon OH. Newly constructed in 2015 the paved asphalt is in great condition. Trail follows the Kokosing River.
