The department was founded in 1955 organized through volunteer efforts and identified in the City charter. In 1966, as the City population was exploding the volunteer board transitioned into an official department with the hiring of the first full time director. Almost 60 years later, we’ve grown into one of the largest suburban departments in Ohio, exceeding most national benchmarks in program participation, facility and park use in addition to receiving local, state and national awards.
