I have no idea what to get’,” says Steven Schelling a fashion stylist and publicist for Diner en Blanc. Mostly, they’re women, he says. “Guys ask too, but it’s usually on the day before and they’re in dire straits.” One cheeky guy asked him if tighty whities would be OK — not recommended but Scheller told him to make sure they’re brand, spanking new and to please keep in mind people around have to eat. The good news is August is the month of summer clothing sales.

But at the same time, there aren’t a lot of whites left. He suggests Maska Mode at Oakridge Mall and on South Granville for mid-range prices and Wardrobe Apparel (67 East Cordova) for the really high-end. Indochino (Gastown) has a Diner en Blanc collection for men but for tailoring, they need four weeks. (Just in time for next year, in other words.) “Joe Fresh and H&M are your best friends, guys,” Schelling says addressing those in dire need. Crystal Carson, Diner en Blanc style director and freelance stylist, suggests hitting the sales as well. “There’s a huge one at Aritzia. I saw a huge rack of white clothing. Hollywood Boutique (Davie St.) has a wide selection of white dresses, I’m told, through the underground information highway.” But first check your closet, she says. If you have a white dress already, just buy white accessories. Alternatives include consignment shops. I saw a Diner en Blanc window display at Turnabout Consignment on Main St., recently.

If you want ‘over the top’, Carson says My Sister’s Closet (Seymour St.) not only sells second-hand gowns, the shop benefits women in need. And while you’re at a consignment store, look for white accessories, clutches, shoes, hats, belts. At Mine And Yours (Hornby St.), you can trade in what you buy there for cash or credit, she says. Or, you might rent. Cache Couture Atelier (South Granville) has rentals for about $250. “About 10 to 20 per cent wear couture and dress up like art installations,” says Carson. And if it must be tighty whities, then only do it with a cape, she says. “But seriously,” she says, “be gentlemen. There’s a certain etiquette. I love to see tuxedos and top hats. If you’re wearing shorts, make sure they’re chino types.” Tuxedos can be rented for about $200. And for regular white men’s clothing, check out The Bay’s sixth floor, Top Shop and Boys’Co, she says. For tables and dining accessories, if you beg, threaten, blackmail, cry inconsolably, Picnic Merchant, an online store, might be able to deliver you a Diner en Blanc package deal (right size table, dishes, glasses, table, linen, white tote bag) in time for the event for $54.

They even include white rain ponchos, says Schelling. Ikea is a go-to store for white chairs but they sell out quickly. Home Depot has $20 tables of the required size for DeB (28 to 30-inch square). “If it’s not white, you can cover it with white fabric or spray paint it,” says Carson. The Bay, Canadian Tire, Army and Navy, and The Dollar Store are sources for tableware. Again, you can rent at places like A & B Partytime Rentals, Pedersens, Lonsdale Party Rentals (North Vancouver) and Celebration Party Rentals (Coquitlam). IF you plan ahead. You ARE leaving things a bit late. Pedersens is all out of whites. “We’re completely out,” says Darlene Mack. They rented 128 tables of the required size and 400 folding chairs. A lot of the earlybirds not only rented tables and chairs, they got linen, glassware, cutlery, dinner and dessert plate, platter and napkins for a very decent package price: $25. “We have a lot of requests for white picnic baskets but we don’t have them,” says Mack.

Lately, she’s just been sending DeB callers to other rental companies which, like Pedersens, is likely depleted of whites. For the desperate, there’s still time to hit some garage sales. And there’s always Craigslist. Look for Diner en Blanc in their subject lines. When I last checked, there were 15 items, including a $45 Size 12 wedding dress, a $55 white Chinese dress, white folding chairs ($40), as well as two tickets to the Whistler DeB with a table, chairs, and a catered meal from Bearfoot Bistro for $300. Here’s an idea from Carson that would make a forgotten wedding dress very happy. Give it a chance to dazzle again. That’s what she’s wearing this year. “I wore always wore tutus but this year, I’m going to be wearing my best friend’s wedding dress with a head piece.” Schelling, who will be madly taking care of business during the event on Tuesday, will be wearing white linen pants, white linen shirt, white vintage belt, vintage white Converse high-tops, and white socks (“the only time I wear them outside the gym!”).
