Get in touch » Stiwdio Maelor aims to offer the selected artists and writers time and space out of their normal life and time to focus on the development of their work and explore the amazing countryside. Artists and writers will enjoy the experience of working alongside artists of different disciplines and at different stages in their career in the beautiful surroundings of the Snowdonia National Park.

A typical residency is from two to twelve weeks. Here is what one artist had to say about her time at Maelor:What I loved about Corris and Stiwdio Maelor? Sitting by the fire, Art conversations, the friendliness of everyone here, sitting in Andy and Adams, how the mist rests on the mountains, being inspired to get up at 5am! walking in the rain, the sound of the river, the smell of the forest and of wood burning stoves, the fantastic vision of Stiwdio Maelor, the hair raising winding roads, the absence of any signal in the mountains, conversations with everyone in the village, being able to go to the Slater’s Arms as a lone female and be accepted, the drama of the bus trying to get through the village, how small the mountains made me feel. low cost fees for self-directed residencies open to applications from visual artists, writers and new media artists self-funded, not for profit venture, aiming to share the unique and inspiring region of Snowdonia, North Wales

The studio is located in a traditional shop in the picturesque slate quarrying village of Corris which is nestled amidst the awesome scenery of Snowdonia National Park. Since its conversion, the building now houses studios used by Veronica Calarco, Maelor’s founder and three studio/bedrooms for visiting artists and writers and a space for the volunteer coordinator. The large, attic studio, with its double bed, sitting area and wood fire stove, is particularly suitable for those seeking a little more space and atmosphere or for two artists. Every artist receives a studio and bedroom. The Attic studio is very large with a separate large bedroom which has a double bed. There is a heater in the bedroom and a wood fire in the studio with a little sitting area, which has a sofa and armchair. There are three tables and two chairs for working on. Studio Pedwar is a medium size studio with a small bedroom with a single bed and an armchair. The studio has two tables and two chairs.

Studio Chwech is a small to medium size studio again with two tables and chairs. The bedroom is separate (there is a door to enter then a door for each room) with a single bed and arm chair. The kitchen, dining room and bathroom facilities are communal. Originally a quarry mining town, Corris is surrounded by forested hills, old slate workings and ruined quarry buildings. The many well-marked walks and bike trails in the surrounding area make Maelor a place of tranquility and inspiration. The village boasts a pub, a small cafe/shop, and a volunteer cafe, and is inhabited by people from an eclectic mix of backgrounds and lifestyles. It really should be called the friendliest village in Wales. Corris is 6 miles from Machynlleth which has the nearest train station. There are regular buses from Machynlleth to Corris six days a week. There is no designated car parking, but people can park cars around the village. Artists must supply their own food and art supplies. Artists are responsible for insuring their property (work, materials, tools and vehicles and any damage they cause to Stiwdio Maelor, etc) whilst on the premises.

Artists are required to clean the bedroom and studio at the end of their residency, leaving it in the same condition as they found it (cleaning  tools and products are provided). Artists must keep the shared areas tidy during their residency. Stiwdio Maelor does not provide internet/wifi.
