Steelcase is famous for making the Leap chair, considered by many to be one of the best office chairs in the market. The US-based company launched a new chair in November that will be available in India later this month. With the new version, it has refined the Leap and made more than a few tweaks to the design, but it’s bumped up the price to match that of an Aeron chair. The Steelcase Gesture—the company calls it a chair for the iPad generation—is priced at $979 (around Rs.60,200); it will go on sale in India for about the same amount. At that price, this isn’t going to be a chair that’s distributed to all office workers (typically, the general office chairs range from Rs.5,000-15,000), which is a pity because young office goers, who are used to working on their laptops, switching seamlessly to their phones, and then leaning back and looking up information using their tablets, are the ones who will really enjoy using a chair like this. The Steelcase Gesture looks too sleek and modern to really fit in with the conception of a CEO’s office chair—there’s fabric instead of leather, and the chair stops at your shoulders instead of towering over your head.
In fact, the design makes it look like there’s no support for your head, but when you lean back, the lower parts separate a little, cradling your back and letting you rest your head as well. The base of the chair is incredibly well balanced, and while the chair moves freely at the slightest effort, it won’t slide around under you. This is because the base is a lot heavier than it looks; trying to lift the chair was extremely difficult. It was incredibly comfortable to sit in and work on the tablet while leaning forward, then make a few adjustments, and lean back and play video games on the big screen. But what does “made for mobiles”, the tag line for the chair that the company is using, actually mean? According to the brochure, the Gesture is the result of a study Steelcase carried out among office workers. They claim they noticed that with the advent of tablets and mobile phones, people were sitting, and working, differently. The company claims that this was followed up with research that observed nine new postures which people use their mobile devices in.
While we can take that with a pinch of salt, the chair does accommodate all sorts of poses. It is easy to customize, to your body and your posture. Simple controls at the base let you adjust the height and flex. That’s pretty normal, but the Gesture lets you move up and down, and back and forth, with a lot more control than other office chairs in the market. The armrests can be raised and lowered independently as well. This isn’t an unusual feature either, but unlike most such chairs, the armrest doesn’t rise vertically but at an angle, because when your hand is lower down, it’s also closer to your body. On most chairs, when you raise the arm, the elbows pull too close to the body. A simple design tweak means that the Gesture is already more comfortable to use. The arms can also move in and out horizontally—again, on a swivel, so you can keep the arms wide while typing, and then pull them closer when you’re using your phone. If you like to keep your phone to your side and lean back, you can arrange the chair to support that as well.
