I've been working with Simple for a couple years, and while their service is convenient and popular for many of my customers, I wanted to discuss the fine print in order to ensure everyone understands the agreement. Here's what you need to know: 1.) To qualify, you need only a checking account, 90 days of employment history, and $1,000 monthly income. 2.) For $4...0 down, you really do get to take your mattress home the same day. 3.) If you pay the mattress off within 90 days, you pay no additional fees (commonly known as interest, but Simple refers to these as 'finance fees'). 4.) If you go beyond 90 days, you will pay approximately 1.8x the cost of your mattress over 12 months.
For example, a $1,000 purchase would equal around $1,800 if you were to enjoy the lower payments during the course of a year, or an extra $800 in finance fees the finance company collects (the merchant doesn't see a penny of this). While this nearly doubles the purchase price, some customers find this to be a welcome alternative to the costly terms of Rent-A-Center, Aaron's, and other rent-to-own stores. 5.) If you decide to pay off after 90 days and before 12 months, you receive a 35% discount from the total finance fee. Using our previous example of $800 in finance fees, you would save $280 by paying off earlier than one year, bringing your total payments to $1,520. 6.) I encourage ALL of my customers to pay off within 90 days to prevent paying extra. Keep in mind that finance fees are the reason finance companies can offer convenient services like the $40 down with no credit check. I try my best to explain the fees and terms of my financing partners, and I encourage you to research the terms of these programs if you have any questions I am unable to answer.
