It's Texas live oak leaf-dropping season, y'all! New smart meters installation next week Trash and recycling pickup ***Important info*** Juana Ramirez, 29, and her two children have never owned a new piece of furniture. After being homeless last summer, they finally were able to move into a duplex. They all shared a very used mattress that the previous tenants left behind. “It was either this mattress or the floor,” she said. Later, she persuaded her parents to give her the old twin mattresses that she and a brother used when they were kids. Everything in the duplex is a hand-me-down and in various stages of broken, including the kitchen table and chairs that are barely standing. On Friday, Factory Mattress delivered a new queen bed for Ramirez and two twin mattresses to go on the bunk beds being used by Stephanie, 9, and Marcus, 8.

It is the sixth year Factory Mattress has donated new beds to all 12 Statesman Season for Caring featured families. This year’s donation represents about $20,000 in new beds and mattresses. “One of the big things is we know that the help is going to people that desperately need it,” said Mark Nelson, chief operating officer of Factory Mattress. “That’s one of the cornerstones of our business. We want to give back to folks, families, kids in crisis through organizations that actually make a difference in their lives.” Factory Mattress always gives good quality mattresses, foundations and bed rails if a family needs them, not just bottom-of-the-line beds. “We don’t want them to be in a worse situation when they wake up in the morning,” he said. “They have enough on their plates. Giving them a better night’s sleep is the least we can do.” For Ramirez, that’s especially important because in May, she herniated a disk at a job, and she was later laid off.

She has been unable to get the physical therapy she needs and is often in pain. She recently had to stop working at a new job at Wendy’s because of the heavy lifting that was required, but this week, she’ll start orientation at a nursing home in Kyle. She’ll help with brushing patients’ teeth and hair, making their beds and reading to them. It’s a job that she said connects with her. “When I help somebody, I get the feeling of peace,” she said. “I love helping people.” She hopes eventually she can go to college and maybe become a nurse. Ramirez has been grateful for what she has received through Season for Caring so far. Last week, Communities in Schools, the agency that nominated her, brought reader donations of a decorated Christmas tree and presents for the kids. Readers Ray and Mary Grace Salazar donated new bikes for the kids. Photographer Deirdre Allinson gave a portrait session for the whole family. Dentist Wayne Radwanski, through the Capital Area Dental Foundation and Seretti Dental Laboratory, will build partial dentures to replace missing teeth, giving her even more reason to smile.
