Wafting on the winter breeze, the scent of apple butter permeated as far as the parking lot outside of Lehman’s Farmhouse Store on Thursday. The store opened shop this week in Buchanan, at 204 N. Red Bud Trail, and will feature products made from Niles’ Lehman’s Orchard. In the light and airy space of the former Clark Testing Lab, jars of jams and jellies line a table on one side of the sales floor, while a variety of wine and beers, made with the farm’s fruit, fill the space along the back wall and in the center of the store. Farm Manager Steve Lecklider — a fourth generation operator at Lehman’s Orchard — said he could not be more thrilled than to be open and in Buchanan. “Buchanan is very approachable and they have been very supportive,” Lecklider said. The store is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday There will be a variety of new products offered throughout the year. Lehman’s Orchard first started operating in 1929.

The 55 acres of farm now produces a variety of fruits from strawberries and raspberries to apples and pears, which are used to create more than 150 products. In 2008, Lehman’s Orchard opened a winery at the orchard location. The winery got a positive response from the community and will remain open seasonally from May through October. Lecklider attributes the family business’ success to creating a delicious product. “People really support authentic products,” Lecklider said. “You can really taste the difference between a commercial product and something that is more of farm to table product. You can really taste the freshness.” In September 2015, Lecklider purchased the building at 204 N. Redbud Trail, the site of the former Clark Testing Lab, which was built in the 1940s to test heavy equipment, Lecklider said. Drawn to the building’s layout and close proximity to the farm, Lecklider said he saw lots of room to get creative with their products, which is one of his favorite aspects to the business.

“I fell in love with making products and growing fruit,” Lecklider said. “I like being innovative and creating new things all the time.” Lecklider is looking to incorporate the building’s history into the building’s decor. He is hoping to get in touch with former Clark employees to see if they have any pictures to offer or memorabilia to share. Lecklider said he found a passion for using creativity to inspire new fruit products. With 12,000 square feet of building to work with, Lecklider said the family run farm saw a whole lot of opportunity to get creative. Coming this spring, the brewery and winery will debut, offering at least eight beers on tap, two ciders on tap, wine, spirits and appetizers. Lecklider said he is hoping to develop some stouts, porters and fruit beers to add to the menu. Lehman’s Farm takes pride in creating products with sustainable practices, so the store also offers yet another outlet to utilize the fruit that is produced so that nothing goes to waste.

Lecklider hired one sales person to run the sales portion of the building and he plans on hiring around six part-time employees for the brewery and winery. “We will expand into steps,” Lecklider said. For now, he said he is happy to have the store in operation. Many residents hiking along the McCoy’s Creek Trail have already expressed intrigue and dropped in to check out the store’s shelves. “We are so thankful to be here in Buchanan,” Lecklider said. “The residences have been so welcoming and they have been coming in and seeing for themselves that we are open.” Beeson Street Grill serving breakfast Dowagiac police log — Feb. 23-24 State representative promotes politics to college students Niles man brandishes weapon, gets probation Dowagiac man sentenced to prison for sexual assault Police log Feb. 20 Niles High School helping students’ hearts stay healthy What’s happening at the Niles District Library
