Explosions, combos, spectacle aplenty and poorly-executed audio - Lego Marvel Avengers delivers all of these in spades. For the most part, the objective is clear. Sprint through an enjoyable, if not entirely coherent, campaign, taking out waves upon waves of enemies and tackling a selection of mini games. Thankfully, for the most part, LEGO Avengers does this well, sticking very closely to the tried-and-tested formula TT Games have honed and refined over the years - bar a few notable updates. For one, there's the new combo system, where players can team up to execute rather spectacular finishing moves - which are best discovered for yourself. Characters, too, are equipped with a couple of signature finishes - which, upon a button press, lock them into a pre-set, if handsome, animation of them stylishly obliterating a foe. The problem is that they start to get repetitive very quickly. As those who remember The Matrix: Path of Neo, which featured a similar mechanic, will know, it can also make for uncomfortable and unnatural animation as enemies suddenly appear in the perfect position to allow for the move to work - even though they may initially be out of range.
The game also has a terrible tendency of continually spawning foes whilst you're figuring out how to get past a certain area. Often you'll face never-ending waves of two or three grunts chasing after you, which can be frustrating if you're concentrating on a particular mini game. Graphically, the game holds up well, even though there are some signs that the engine, although noticeable more detailed than in LEGO Marvel Superheroes, is starting to lose its sheen. Still, there’s little slowdown and, bar the odd crash, Avengers is a joy to behold. The environments, too, have been lovingly created, from Sokovia, Manhattan, The S.H.I.E.L.D base, Stark Tower... they're all here and look exactly how they should do. Add to the mix a 200-strong character roster featuring the likes of 15 different Iron Man suits, The Hulk, Stan Lee and Captain America - all captured perfectly in LEGO form - and it starts to look like a comprehensive package. It's a shame, then, that the audio is such a mixed bag. Whilst the musical score and sound effects are on point, the way TT has incorporated sample voices from characters in the movies leaves a lot to be desired. You'll often be interrupted mid-battle by a phrase lifted straight from one of the movies, only for all surrounding noise to become almost silent. The same technique also crops up in cut-scenes, and can come across as lifeless and inconsistent. There's no denying that Avengers does a lot well, but just isn't the blockbuster we expected after the brilliant Marvel Superheroes. Still, for fans of the movies, or LEGO for that matter, it's hard not to recommend. Le jeu vous indique quasiment tout le temps ce que vous devez faire pour avancer, que ce soit par des messages textes ("Vous devez utiliser un personnage de grande taille pour détruire cette porte") ou par des indicateurs n'ayant rien de discret, comme l'icône d'une araignée représentant Spider Man. Malgré cette simplicité extrême, le jeu est très bien fait et chaque phase est conçue pour que vous puissiez entièrement finir le niveau et ayez les ressources nécessaires pour accéder aux différentes zones. De plus, vous pourrez profiter, outre la répartition classique des niveaux (qui vous permet de débloquer des zones et des nouveaux personnages), d'un monde ouvert dans lequel vous pourrez réaliser de petites missions ou tout simplement parcourir la ville avec vos personnages préférés. La grande réussite de Lego Marvel Super Heroes est la manière dont Traveller Tales a réussi à retransmettre l'essence des personnages de comics dans un personnage Lego.
Chaque superpouvoir de chaque personnage est extrêmement bien retranscrit et ressemble beaucoup à celui que possède le superhéros tout en restant adapté à un jeu Lego. Hulk par exemple peut se transformer en Bruce Banner et inversement et son pouvoir de destruction est hors norme. Spider Man peut utiliser ses toiles de plusieurs manières, la Veuve Noire est bien sûr forte en combat, mais est également l'"intello" de la bande et va résoudre les puzzles. Bien sûr, tous ces pouvoirs respectent le sens de l'humour propre à Lego ainsi que les caractéristiques du comics et des films associés. Le moteur graphique des jeux Lego accuse le temps qui passe. Il nous parait moins spectaculaire après quelques heures de jeu et vaut tout juste la peine d'être vu. Mais d'un autre côté, faut-il plus pour un jeu conçu pour tous les âges ? Les personnages Marvel ne sont pas uniquement bien conçus quant à leurs pouvoirs : ils ressemblent également physiquement aux originaux, même ceux de plus grande taille comme les méchants Galactus ou l'Homme de Sable, qui offrent des moments spectaculaires dans le jeu.
