(Jeff Bassett For The Globe and Mail) B.C. brothers’ sleek, modular homes have Lego appeal Each week, we seek expert advice to help a small or medium-sized business overcome a key issue.Kurt Goodjohn is building his business one house at a time. Mr. Goodjohn and his brother Kris co-founded Karoleena Inc., a designer and manufacturer of premium modular prefabricated homes and cottages, in 2006. Mr. Goodjohn likens the components that make up Karoleena’s modernist, energy-efficient houses to big Lego blocks. “We design all of our homes using our ‘Lego’ blocks, and then they’re pieced together onsite,” he says.

Karoleena, which was originally based in Calgary, where the Goodjohns started out building more conventional houses, can complete most of its homes within six months after the design is approved. Besides speed, another advantage of building in their 35,000-square-foot plant in Okanagan Falls, B.C., is better quality control, says Mr. Goodjohn, who is Karoleena’s chief marketing officer. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. 4 - 1x4 @ 22-1/2" long (cut these from the same boards used to cut the side aprons) 4 - 1x4 @ 23-1/4" long 6 - 1x4 @ 24" long - trays 2 - 1x4 @ 50-1/2" long - side aprons 1 - 24" x 40" x 3/4" plywood or MDF panel - tabletop Drill 3/4" pocket holes, two per end, on each of the four 1x4 that are 22-1/2" long.  Then attach to the legs with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws and glue.  Set legs aside when done. Drill two 3/4" pocket holes on each end of the six 1x4s that are 24" long.

Nail together three of the boards in a U shape with 1-1/4" nails and glue, keeping all outside edges flush, with pocket holes on the outsides. Attach the trays to the side aprons with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws and glue, outside edges are flush. Cut the 24" x 48" project panel down in size to 40".  Drill 3/4" pocket holes along the underside of the 40" long sides, spacing about every 6-8".  Place panel inside frame, with pocket holes on underside, checking to make sure trays are positioned correctly, and attach with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws and glue.  Leave 1/4" gaps on ends of panel to allow paper to feed through. Sand and finish the pieces.  On assembly, place legs inside table, leaving a 1/4" gap between trays and legs to allow paper feed to pass through.  Screw legs to side aprons and underside of tabletop with 1-1/4" screws.  You can glue or leave without glue for easy disassembly and storage. Drill holes in one leg to add a paper roll dowel.
