In the sort of news entire childhoods are made of, Lego has revealed that it’s obtained the toy licences for both DC Comics and Marvel – making a new game based on them extremely likely. Lego Super Heroes – supervillains will be bricking it The news was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, and although video games have not yet been mentioned the fact that Warner Bros. owns both DC Comics and Lego developer Traveller’s Tales – and has already made a Lego Batman game – makes a game tie-in the most obvious thing since Trevor McObvious pointed out that two and two equals four. Since Lego Batman already exists making a game based on the wider DC universe always seemed a natural move, but as many fail to realise – when dreaming up potential new Lego games – Lego has to actually own the toy licence before any game can go ahead. That’s no longer a problem for DC Comics though and mini-figures of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Joker and Poison Ivy were already being shown off at Comic-Con ( including these odd looking ‘Hero Factory’ figures ).
The really unexpected thing is that Marvel characters such as Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine and Thor were also shown alongside them – and all part of a single toy line called Lego Super Heroes . Although Marvel and DC have a long history of collaborating with comic crossovers we don’t recall ever seeing them team-up for a licensed product before. According to Lego the line will focus on three specific areas of the Marvel universe: the upcoming Avengers movie, X-Men and Spider-Man. As a result figures of Hawkeye, Loki, Black Widow, Magneto, Nick Fury, Deadpool, Spideer-Man and Doctor Octopus have also been promised, but not yet shown. We assume many will be sold alongside play sets – making the prospect of a Lego S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Trevor McObvious’ second tip of the day. The toys are due out in May 2012, so we’d assume some sort of game tie-in would be out around that time too (which is exactly what happened with Lego Pirates Of The Caribbean).
