Lost interest in my teens but got back into it about 5 years ago when I was bought the VW camper for Christmas. In 2014, with interest re-kindled, I approached Head of Steam Museum with a view to putting on a LEGO display in the museum, which was met with favour. Realising I couldn’t do it myself I advertised for like minded people to come and help out and from there we are where we are today.
Favourite LEGO theme: My favourite theme is City, but I don’t really have a favourite as I like them all. Favourite LEGO set: Tower Bridge and the Arc de Triomphe are worth a mention. Adam B: “I got into LEGO in quite an unorthodox way. As a child I only had one or two boxes or Bricks and then a bit later, two small Technic sets – 8840 Rally Shock and Roll Racer, and 8856 Whirlwind Rescue. That was about it until around 6 years ago when I realised how much LEGO was worth and started buying it to sell on at profit. “Now I no longer buy to sell and the last 3-4yrs has seen my collection grow from nothing to approximately 100 sets. I buy to build and exhibit, and although I’m now poorer, it is more fulfilling.” “I build from most themes, though favour bigger, realistic display sets over small or play features.” Favourite LEGO set: 10231 Shuttle Expedition. “I got my very first set for Christmas in (I think) 1980. This was the Rocket Launch Pad (920).
I adored this set and my early LEGO space collection expanded rapidly with every birthday and Christmas. I still own that first set – I’m actually sat next to it as I type this! As I got a bit older, I became more interested in the 12V railways and built some impressive layouts (for a twelve year old!). Sadly by my later teens I had lost interest in LEGO although I occasionally dug out old sets to re-build from time-to-time.” “My interest was not re-kindled until about 2012 whilst looking to sell some old toys and stumbling across some of the UCS sets for sale on eBay. “I stopped being interested in LEGO the year before starting secondary school (around 1990/91) – the same time LEGO stopped using its “Legoland” branding and started to use “SYSTEM”.” “I kept all the old LEGO, and now have a couple of bookcases displaying it all, and got back into LEGO in 2005 when “City” came out. I now have a “modest” collection spanning many themes. According to Brickset website I have nearly 300 items and over 75,000 pieces of LEGO, and didn’t even know the term AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) existed until 2013.” Favourite LEGO theme: Creator Expert and I have a major soft spot for Classic “Legoland” (1980s) spanning Castle, Town, Space and Pirate. I didn’t really have a ‘dark age’ but have certainly started a period of enlightenment recently with quantities of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene in my house increasing somewhat! Favourite LEGO set: “hmmm that’s a hard one, will have a think!”I was born & raised in Darlington and for as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a LEGO fan. However, it’s only since I attended the first LEGO Inside Tour (in 2004) in my teenage years, that I found out that I could actually get a job designing LEGO sets. Since all those years ago, the drive and passion to become a LEGO Designer has always stayed. I studied Design at Goldsmiths, University of London and also worked as a Model Designer & Technical Assistant for Merlin Magic Making. For over four and a half years, I was able to design, build & install LEGO models that you can find at many of the LEGOLAND parks all over the world.
