Following the release of its hip MTV trailer set to Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz”, Suicide Squad is starting to look like the stylish, edgy comic book romp its Warner Brothers/DC predecessor, Batman V Superman, fell just shy of becoming. And its premise – setting villains up to play heroes – not only puts an interesting twist on the traditional comic book dynamic, but it also fleshes out the often mustache-twirling panache-factories which are comic book villains. For related reasons, the upcoming Suicide Squad looks to reinvent some of the roughest elements of the DC supervillain pantheon. Among the most interesting members of the film’s Task Force X is Will Smith’s Deadshot, a sniper with a ‘death wish.’ However, even before the assassin makes his big screen debut, it sounds like Smith already has his character’s sights set on the Batsuit. Following his acceptance of the Generation Award at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, Smith discussed his upcoming Suicide Squad role with MTV News.
The actor speculated about the DC assassin’s future, joking about DC’s tight security: “They [Warner Bros./DC] don’t tell you anything.” However, when asked where he’d like to take the character next, Smith replied (tongue sort of in cheek): “There was one of the comics…Bruce Wayne got injured, and I think Deadshot came in for a couple of them, you know. He had to throw on the Batsuit. So I’m just saying, if they’re gonna draw on that…I wouldn’t reject it. I’m a team player. He even attempted to replace Gotham City’s main Bat before he was discovered to be less-than altruistic. The actor could also be crossing Deadshot into the animated film, Batman: Bad Blood, where the hero goes missing and is replaced by the efforts of Robin, Batwing, Batwoman, and Nightwing. Smith, who’ll next reprise his role as Mike Lowrey in Bad Boys 3, either hasn’t been asked about his presence in the rumored Suicide Squad sequel or can’t specify his role due to potential spoilers. Nevertheless, sequel chatter seems to indicate that Deadshot could survive the carnage from the trailers. If the sequel does happens, though, anything’s possible. Recent rumors about Suicide Squad arriving with a larger helping of Batman aren’t entirely surprising, either, since Batman was one of the Squad’s regular targets and wranglers. And Batman and Deadshot have always had an odd relationship – with the assassin even being called out for pulling his shots against the Dark Knight.
At times, it almost seems as though the anti-hero sees Batman as a surrogate for his dead brother; and as unlikely as it seems, Smith’s desire isn’t entirely out of character either, as the mercenary has been walking a somewhat less villainous line in recent DC Comics storylines. As one of DC’s more compelling characters, hopefully Deadshot will live on in future DCEU films. The mercenary is a fantastic mirror for the Dark Knight, and what he could easily become if he lost his moral compass. Depending upon the success of Suicide Squad, Smith may have another shot at playing the anti-hero in a sequel and may even get his wish, or at go another round with Batman in the solo Batfleck film. A new trailer for Injustice 2 has been released, introducing fan favorites Harley Quinn and Deadshot to the beat-‘em-up video game proceedings. The interpretations of these two DC baddies are top-notch, as Harley has her handy baseball bat and Deadshot is strapped with his trademark arm guns. This being an Injustice game, the footage understandably looks incredible. It seems to be no accident that these two show up in-game in the weeks after Suicide Squad hit the big screen, and the scenes on display here do a good job of fusing their comic looks with the big-screen designs general fans might be more familiar with. Oh, and Harley Quinn vs. Wonder Woman?
The game itself will pick up in the wake of Injustice: Gods Among Us as Batman and his team work to re-establish order following the fall of Superman’s regime. Plus, considering how much Justice League director Zack Snyder seems to like this series, it could definitely be one to keep an eye on (even if you’re not that into video games).
