It was the most we had ever paid for a chair and the worst investment. I wasn't completely happy after we got it in the house and had thoughts of returning it then. Since it was my husband's chair he was pleased with it so I let it go. Now he admits its no longer comfortable to sit in plus add the fact its starting to look pretty ugly with the color wearing off. Even the lift mechanism is awful. Every time he lowers the chair it sounds like a bomb is going off. He tries not to even lift it anymore. I contacted the store and went higher up with the company. Bad product and lousy customer service...so sorry FW. 8,937 posts, read 7,938,234 times

Elite Leather Company – Fine Leather Furniture As with everything, it is best to buy high on the "food chain." We have had our Elite pieces for about 3 years. So far, so good. 8,794 posts, read 10,451,878 times I worked in sales at a good-quality furniture store for several years. We carried many brands of recliners in a broad price range. I know you asked what not to buy, but there are so many bad ones and they change names so often I wouldn't answer that. A recliner IS a "you get what you pay for" item because in addition to the upholstery and fabric you have the issue of needing a properly functioning and long-lasting recliner mechanism.

What I will tell you is: the best brand we carried was Lane. Not only does Lane make an excellent chair (reclining and standard), they use a top-quality recliner mechanism. They also have one of the better warranties in the business. Their website says, "Lane warrants the black metal parts of the reclining mechanism to be free of defects for as long as you, the original consumer, own the furniture." That is very rare. First Class Warranty :: Customer Service :: Lane Another great thing about Lane is the wide range of styles they make. Everything from small-scale recliners (a recliner suitable to fit a petite woman is very hard to find) to the Comfort King (a dream come true for the big or tall man). I was also able to use the Lane line to end the war between husbands who wanted a recliner and wives who were of the "those ugly things are not going in my house" mindset. Lane accommodates custom upholstery fabrics and some even have a hidden recliner control rather than a lever on the side.

My personal experience with Lane is this. I still own (and use) a Lane recliner that my late grandmother bought prior to World War II. It's been re-upholstered several times and all it does is tilt backwards in a single position, but it's very comfortable and the simple reclining mechanism still works like a charm. The last time I got it re-covered, the upholsterer said, "Do you know what that IS? It's like the first recliner ever invented." And he offered to buy it from me. I don't know if that's true or not, but I turned down his offer. 1,248 posts, read 2,413,694 times 1,136 posts, read 1,092,861 times 2 posts, read 20,874 times Avoid at all costs!!! 401 posts, read 410,292 times Originally Posted by tjaradoMy husband wanted a recliner, and I don't like the look of a usual recliner.
