Lubricant provides a layer of protection to your recliner's metal parts against rust and corrosion. It’s not uncommon for your recliner to squeak after a period time. This is caused by the internal mechanisms wearing and rubbing against each other as you recline the chair. Nuts and bolts inside the chair may loosen as well, causing the chair to make noise when you sit in it. Lubrication of these components and tightening the nuts and bolts often eliminates squeaks and other noises, and it is a task that doesn’t require a call to a professional. Place a tarp on the floor and sit in your chair. Open the chair to the fully reclined position. Leave the chair in the reclined position and turn it over onto the tarp so that you can access the mechanisms beneath. Remove detachable coverings on the underside of the recliner by hand if possible. Some coverings are fastened with screws or nails. Remove these carefully with a screwdriver or a claw hammer to avoid damage to the chair or the covering.
Tighten nuts or bolts inside the chair with an adjustable wrench by turning them clockwise. Apply a spray lubricant labeled for use with metal parts or clear mineral oil to the nuts, bolts, coils, springs, hinges and all moving mechanisms on the underside of your recliner. As you apply lubricant to each part, place a rag behind it to prevent the lubricant from staining the recliner upholstery. Turn the recliner upright and sit in it again. Set it to the closed position and then recline it fully again. Do this a few times and listen for squeaks as you recline and close the chair. Apply more lubricant and retighten the nuts and bolts if the squeak persists. Turn the recliner over and reattach the covering if the squeak has stopped. If the chair still squeaks after repeated applications of lubricant, contact a qualified technician to examine the recliner. The recliner we’re recovering in the video was in really great shape but the fabric wasn’t working in the owner’s new home. A quick way to tell if a recliner is worth working on is to check the stability of the arms—are they loose or shaky? If they are only a little loose, you can tighten them, but if they are very wobbly, the chair may be beyond saving. Also make sure the reclining mechanism is still in good working order. When selecting a new fabric for your recliner, think about the pattern. We don’t recommend choosing a very linear pattern, like stripes or plaid, because of the chair’s many moving parts. It can be hard to line the pattern up along the chair and as you use your recliner the pieces might shift and make the piece look sloppy.
