Bukan sekadar untuk dipakai di kaki, mengumpul kasut kini dikenali sebagai satu hobi yang menguntungkan. Sepasang kasut yang dibeli beberapa tahun lepas kini boleh mencecah 7 kali harga asal, begitulah obsesi mereka yang dikenali sebagai sneakerheads. Bagi Izam Shariman, pemilik kafe April 24 dan seorang pengarah seni yang beroperasi secara bebas, hobi mengumpul kasut keluaran Vans kini menjadi tumpuan komuniti penggemar sneakers seluruh dunia. Bermula dari forum pengumpul kasut-kasut Vans yang dikenali sebagai Under The Palms, Izam telah membuka cawangan kolektif itu di Malaysia dengan tujuan untuk memberi kelainan kepada komuniti penggemar sneakers di Malaysia yang rata-rata hanya mengikuti aliran fesyen terkini.
Usaha beliau mendapat perhatian dari syarikat Vans Malaysia, dan kedua pihak ini menggembeling tenaga dan kreativiti untuk mempamerkan koleksi Under The Palms MY sempena acara Sneakerlah 2016. Motif di sebalik Under The Palms MY? “Aku nak meriahkan scene sneakers di Malaysia ni. Harapnya nanti buat komuniti penggemar sneakers di seluruh dunia, tapi buat masa ni kita fokus ke Malaysia. Jadi, beberapa tahun lepas aku ada tanya ahli-ahli forum Under The Palms (berpusat di Los Angeles, California), sekiranya aku boleh membuka cawangan Malaysia. Mereka bersetuju selepas lama berkenalan menerusi forum, dan mereka yakin koleksi aku pasti mendapat perhatian. Selepas acara Sneakerlah, nampaknya objektif dah tercapai. Ramai juga yang tag kami di post Instagram mereka, dari situ kami boleh nampak komuniti penggemar kasut Vans di Malaysia sudah meluas dan aktif mengumpul edisi-edisi yang jarang dijumpai.” Bagaimana obsesi ini bermula?Bermula dari masa aku kerja TV3, masa tu bujang, jadi ada la duit lebih sikit nak beli kasut.
Gaya aku pun jenis sempoi, jadi tak perlu beli kasut kulit yang mahal-mahal. Kasut pertama yang aku beli ialah New Balance Taxi, tak silap aku. Lepas tu, kasut-kasut running ni mula hacur, jadi aku pun mula lah kumpul Vans. Tak lama lepas tu aku berkenalan dengan seorang penggemar sneakers dari Belanda bernama Erwin melalui Facebook. Rumah dia dah seperti kedai, semua benda dia kumpul, dari kasut sampai ke papan tanda dan memoribilia Vans! Erwin menjemput aku menyertai forum Off The Wall Site (sebelum ditukar kepada Under The Palms disebabkan hal guaman). Masa tu (sekitar tahun 2011) koleksi aku dalam 30-40 pasang dan mereka minta aku kongsi gambar koleksi aku. Selepas mereka sedar yang aku mempunyai sepasang kasut kolaborasi Vans dan Supreme dari tahun 1996, aku terus giat dalam kolektif Under The Palms. Pada tahun 2013, Under The Palms telah mendapat undangan dari restoran. Jepun di Los Angeles; Yojie Japanese Fondue untuk membuat pameran seni bertemakan Vans. Jadi aku telah menyumbangkan satu lukisan sempena acara itu.”
“Sempoi, bila pakai tak ada lah nampak beriya sangat. Rekabentuknya senang dikenakan dengan apa-apa gaya. Dahulu bila aku mula mengumpul sneakers, kasut Vans ini dianggap sebagai kasut pakai buang oleh kebanyakan sneakerheads. Sebab murah dan masa itu Vans dipakai oleh samada skateboarders atau peminat musik. Aku ada juga cuba menjual kasut-kasut dari koleksi aku, tapi disebabkan kurang minat dari penggemar sneakers, aku simpan sahaja kasut-kasut aku. Itu yang makin lama makin banyak kasut aku, nasib baik ada acara macam Sneakerlah. Boleh aku pamerkan segala apa yang aku telah kumpulkan.” Kasut perempuan VS kasut sneakerheads? “Semua orang mesti ada hobi, jadi kalau nak cerita pasal pembaziran, benda yang aku kumpul ada nilai. Sepasang kasut boleh jual, samada boleh dapat kembali modal atau untung. Sejak berkeluarga aku dah kurang mengumpul kasut, bukan ligat macam dahulu sebab dah ada keutamaan hidup, nak beli kena fikir yang mana patut beli atau tidak. Isteri aku tak kumpul kasut, kalau ada pun aku yang belikan.
Kasut-kasut jenama fesyen yang diminati oleh para perempuan melampau harganya, jadi aku tak rasa sneakerheads dalam kategori yang sama. Dahulu isteri aku ada juga bising (marah tehadap obsesi beliau), tapi selepas aku tunjuk dia nilai kasut-kasut yang ada sekarang, dia mula faham. Tapi teman aku dari Belanda, Erwin sudah hampir mencecah umur 55 tahun dan dia masih mengumpul! Beza aku dengan sneakerheads lain, aku hanya beli sepasang untuk dipakai sendiri. Aku tidak membeli 2-3 pasang semata-mata untuk menjualnya kembali. Sesetengah edisi kasut kolaborasi yang edisi terhad kini boleh dijual kembali pada harga RM1,000 (walaupun sudah dipakai dan keadaan tidak begitu elok). Kerana di Amerika Syarikat, harga pasaran sepasang kasut yang 'rare' di atas harga USD 300; sampai aku pun fikir masa kekurangan duit patut kah aku jual beberapa pasang dari koleksi aku. Tapi fikir balik, susah pula nak dapatkan kembali kasut-kasut tu nanti. Aku juga pernah beli kasut pada harga RM1,000 beberapa tahun lepas.
Kini kasut yang aku sebut tadi berharga USD 800! Jadi bagi aku, untuk soalan ini, kasut ini dikira sebagai pelaburan, sama macam orang kumpul beg-beg berjenama mahal.” Apa rancangan seterusnya Under The Palms MY? “Lepas acara Sneakerlah 2016, akaun Instagram kami mendapat lebih seribu followers, hari ni sahaja kami dah dapat beratus-ratus followers. Buat masa ini, kami hanya hendak membuat pameran. Jadi bagi mereka yang meminati dan memiliki kasut Vans, bolehlah tag kami di Instagram. Mungkin pada masa hadapan kami ingin anjurkan sesi santai bersama pengumpul-pengumpul Vans yang lain, dan mungkin boleh kembangkan kepada barangan Under The Palms MY.” Sebelum kami menghabiskan sesi temuramah ini, Izam ada memberitahu yang dia didekati pemilik kedai barangan streetwear yang tertarik dengan cara beliau menghiasi ruang pameran dan memintanya mengolah galeri jualan mereka.
