At one end of the spectrum there is the people who like to "rough it". They will sleep out in the wilderness with nothing more than a few leaves and a plastic tarp for bedding. On a clear summer's night you can pull back the canvas layer and stargaze as you drift-off to sleep behind the protection of the mesh fly-screen layer. For some people (like me) as they get older the allure of sleeping on the ground loses its luster. After a long day exploring the outdoors its nice to be able to rest a weary body on a soft surface. So we have been playing around with some accessories to give your swag, "bed like" comfort. Twin Size Mattress Topper The first option to give you "bed like" comfort that we found was was a cheap twin size mattress topper from Walmart. This is a inexpensive option at around $8 that gives you a bit more cushion but it will make your swag bulkier when you pack it up. It fits great in the Pioneer Swag and is easy to add or remove before your trip if you know you will be sleeping on some firm ground.

A modern swag is a waterproof canvas sleeping compartment that is sometimes insect-proof. All swags come with a foam mattress, and can comfortably be slept in with the addition of a pillow and sleeping bag.[] When rolled up the swag is relatively lightweight and compact, making it ideal for storage and transport. It is typically easy to erect, and roll up can be done quickly. Swags are still heavily used in Australia, by overlanders. There are still a large number of manufacturers actively making both standard and custom-design swags.
