Melding Function with Fancy The Spun Chair is just the kind of furniture you'd expect from one of the most innovative designers working today—Thomas Heatherwick. His aim, he says, is "to bring architecture, design, and sculpture together within a single practice." In the Spun Chair, Heatherwick artfully melds function with fancy. If it was possible to make large drums with spun metal, might it be possible to make a chair with a completely symmetrical rotational form?
And would it be comfortable to sit in? After extensive research and experimentation, Heatherwick Studio produced an ergonomic form that works as a chair, whichever way it is rotated. To achieve this in a single form, the seat had to be capable of serving as a back support and the back support had to make a comfortable seat. At college, Heatherwick had been taught by a silversmith, skilled in using big sheets of silver to make large goblets and trophies. Working with the gallery, Haunch of Venison, Heatherwick Studio used the traditional craft of large-scale metal spinning to produce a series of highly finished pieces in different metals. The studio also collaborated with the Italian furniture manufacturer, Magis, to develop a version made with a different kind of rotational process, rotation-moulded plastic. Founded in 1976, Italian designer Eugenio Perazza began the first steps towards building an international design laboratory. In Latin, Magis means "more than" and that is exactly what Magis delivers while focusing on using less materials and energy. Always perched on the cutting edge, Perazza was named as "one of ten who will change the way we live."In 1984, Magis experienced enormous success with their product Step. This ladder was snubbed upon initial release because it was not an item considered "worthy" of the furniture store circuit.
However, the product met with tremendous success, especially in furniture stores, and Magis' fire was lit.In 2004, Magis introduced their venture into the realm of children. Inspired by his granddaughter's propensity for drawing and a lack of appropriate children's desks, Eugenio Perazza conceived the Me Too Collection. He began by searching out designers who could think like a child and all the products in the collection earned Perazza's granddaugter's approval before going into production. The Me Too Collection features bright and innovative pieces that stimulate and engage children's perceptions.
