Designed for Apartamento Magazine I designed the DIY Chair to be constructed using very cheap and common building materials readily available from your local DIY shop or hardware store, using simple hand tools and joinery methods, by you. A design for everyone and anyone; massproduction in fact, but production by the masses rather than by machines. My DIY Chair provides a template for affordable and functional design, which can be easily constructed by both the highly technical and less practical person alike, using the most basic of tools and materials. But nobody need make the chair if they don’t require one. This is partly the point. The number of DIY Chairs produced will coincide directly with the number of DIY Chairs people want or need. Supply and demand in synergy, controlled quite naturally by the consumer. The design consists of 31 pieces of wood, all of which are exactly the same size (47cm). During construction one piece of wood is used to measure the spacing between the slats and to help locate all the other pieces.

I suggest using ‘Smooth Planed Pine’, which is a softwood commonly used by the building industry and has a smooth, splinter free surface. The idea is to use a local or indigenous wood that is easily obtained, affordable and sustainable. The dimension of wood required is 34mm x 18mm and typically available in lengths from 2 metres to 3.6 metres. I bought seven lengths of 2.7 metre pine. The critical dimension is the 18mm x 34mm cross-section of the wood as this dictates the width and depth of the DIY Chair, and also the spacing between the seat surface and backrest slats. If this is not available as standard in your hardware store, a second option is to contact your local timber merchant or saw mill who will be able to cut wood to the exact dimensions. This can be a surprisingly rewarding option allowing you to select your favourite type of wood from the plethora of soft and hardwoods available. Alternatively you can simply use my DIY Chair instructions as a template to design and build your own chair, table, stool etc.

You can edit the design and assembly as much as you like. The possibilities are infinite. When I designed and built the original DIY Chair, the wood and the screws required to make one chair cost just £9.77. Thus it is possible to self construct a dining set of six chairs for less than £60. The point is, the DIY Chair is a piece of furniture that you can construct yourself, sit on and be proud of. Whether you follow my instructions or edit the design according to your needs, please share the DIY ethos and send me a picture of your DIY Chair once finished. From scoring the championship goal in an online match against you friends, to watching your favourite Blu-ray movie or streaming the latest Netflix series, Xbox consoles can handle all your digital entertainment needs. The Xbox One is the flagship Microsoft console in Canada, but the Xbox 360 still more than holds its own. Each one provides entertainment options in the way of games, digital movie rentals, DVD/Blu-ray functionality, and a full suite of popular apps, such as Netflix.

While the Xbox One leans heavily on Internet connectivity to give users the best possible Xbox experience, an "always-on" Internet connection is not required. The Xbox One also features a more efficient power system than the Xbox 360, so it won't consume a lot of energy. Joining the Xbox ecosystem allows gamers to tap into exclusive game franchises that aren’t available on other gaming systems. These award-winning franchises include series such as Halo, the cinematic first-person shooter; Gears of War, the gritty third-person tactical shooter; Forza Motorsport, the fast-paced racing simulator; and Scalebound, the much-anticipated dragon adventure epic. A growing list of Xbox 360 games are also now backwards compatible with Xbox One, which means you can play select 360 games on both consoles. The Xbox One console is powered by the cloud, which means you can instantly pick up where you left off in a game or a movie by logging onto any internet-connected console. A connection to the cloud also means your games and console are updated automatically, so you don't have to wait for bothersome downloads and installations when you turn the system on to play a game or watch a movie.

Both Xbox One and Xbox 360 offer the ability to store your game saves on the cloud, which not only frees up space on your console's hard drive, but gives you the ability to access those game saves on any internet-connected Xbox console. Kinect isn't required to use either the Xbox One or the Xbox 360, but connecting one to your console of choice unlocks a range of next-generation features that dramatically enhance your Xbox experience. These include motion sensor gaming, voice-enabled gaming, voice-activated settings, and facial recognition. With Kinect, you can verbally give your Xbox commands, turn your body into a game controller, and automatically sign in to your Xbox Live account simply by letting Kinect recognize your face. Avoid splinters by properly maintaining your deck this summer. Image: Liz Foreman for HouseLogicThere’s nothing worse than walking around your and winding up with feet full of splinters; worse, having to yank out tiny shards from kid knees and hands. That happened to us when our infant son, Ben, practiced his crawling on our older deck. We were horrified to find our only child looking like a porcupine with splinters hanging from his legs and hands. We rushed him to the pediatrician, sure the next call would be to Social Services. But our doc had seen this thing before and expertly plucked out the splinters. If you have to be the doc, this article on how to remove splinters with minimal fuss and muss is quite useful. But the best way to handle splinters is to not get them in the first place by maintaining your deck. Your options for a splinter-free deck are varied. We’re pretty impressed with the budget-friendly options The Pragmatist at The New York Times came up with, such as covering your deck with tile or the new mold-resistant outdoor carpeting.
