We arrive in SD for Memorial Day weekend. We stay at the Palomar. We want to spend just half day/one day on the beach. Which is the best beach to do that - we want to avoid renting a car. Is there a beach where one can rent chairs/umbrella/cabana and will have access to showers, food, etc .... OK, you are staying in the Downtown San Diego area. Take the San Diego Trolley to the Old Town Transit Center, and transfer to the Route 8 bus for a short trip to the Belmont Park area of Mission Beach. Plenty of places to rent beach equipment, and has showers and bathrooms, and plenty of restaurants. One attraction mentioned in this post Ranked of 419 things to do in San Diego Darkbeer, I have no idea where anyone could rent beach umbrellas or chairs on Pacific Beach? Please tell me where you can do that so that I can help folks there who need those items. Most people spread out blankets/towels or buy inexpensive ones from local pharmacies or supermarkets. The closest beach to downtown (IMO) is across the bay in Coronado.

You can take the 901 bus there. It is $5 for an all day transit pass. Here is the schedule and route map of the bus: There are bathrooms but also no where I know to rent beach equipment. Here is one place that rents chairs and umbrellas. The closest and easiest beach to get to from Downtown SD is Coronado. The 901 Bus will take you. Hotel del Coronado has a package to rent umbrellas, chairs. You have to contact them for pricing and particulars. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas in a few places, but no cabanas, I think they would be illegal on the public beaches. You do know it will be crazy busy right? And no alcohol is allowed on San Diego beaches too, right? If you were looking for the beach experience, there are far better hotels than the Palomar to do that in. You can directions for public transportation using Google Maps. Being that your stay here isn't based on a beach vacation and you only want to spend half a day or so at the beach, the Palomar is fine.

As been said you can easily get to the beach on the 901 bus. If you want to have a drink at the beach (which you didn't say you did) have a drink at Hotel del outside. Or for a slower pace you can take the Ferry from the Convention Center to Coronado (15 min) and spend a little time at the Coronado Ferry Landing. And from there take the bus or taxi to the beach another 15 mins or so. Without a car is good so you don't have to fight for parking on a holiday. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:-This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
