I am staying in a condo just east of the Whale's Tail restaurant and unless I get to the beach at 6:30 am, the rental guys take every inch of beach front with their chairs and umbrellas for a quarter mile. I'm 63 and can't walk that far. I think that stinks and want to know who owns/runs this operation on Destin's public beaches. OK, from my balcony I just counted 107 rental umbrellas in a row. Also, we rented one the other day and for 2 chairs and one umbrella it cost us $40! That part of the beach is owned by Seascape - it is up to them to allow the chair guys on the property - they get a portion of the rental proceeds. Destin has no control over this - in fact area is in Miramar Beach/ One destination mentioned in this post There is a special rule that applies for those setting up beach chairs to rent. I beleive it has something to do with a 10 foot distance from the point of high tide to where the chair rows can start. We typicaly put our chairs right at the high tide point with no compaints but sometimes a dirty look

Guess that's what we'll do. Found some chairs in our unit but no umbrella. With 3 grandchildren, they want to be right at the water's edge...... I find it hard to believe the Seascape owns the beach all the way to the Whale's Tail... that's a lot of beach. Where's the public beach? Each area, each condo area for the most part picks whom they want to set up the services or they send out bids...have a few good friends that got some good contracts along 30a AND YES they do very well financially during the season... Supply and demand is how they get those prices..... I don't care if they set em up, I will carry my chair ,cooler and park it in front of them We rent the set-ups and will request one right by the water and they always accomodate us. Many properties offer Complimentary Beach Service, so you have chairs waiting for you and you don't have to haul your own down.... WE are renting a house that has beach service provided. Essentially we are getting 2 chairs and one unbrella for 17 people.

That just isn't gong to cut it. We are all ready paying almost $10,000 for the house. For each adult to have a chair for the week it will cost us another $840? That is just crazy. So, if we just set up closer to the water we should be ok? Does that include popping up a Cabana or will that be pushing it? no offense, maybe you were unaware but did you check into the amount of beach chairs that the rental home was going to provide? Most rental(s) of the condos do normally give you 2 as well. Is the house you are renting on the gulf ? To me there is nothing wrong with setting up beach chairs close to the water line ( i may be incorrect but i think its 20 feet - so its open season to set up camp in front of already set up beach service rental chairs.) the cabana thing - I personally wouldnt go that far - Recommendations where to stay Best kiddie pool area? * * * days to Destin! Driving from Dallas, TX to Destin, FL Need the cheapest place to stay Snorkeling: Shell Island or Destin jetties? Best time to visit Destin? The Destin forum has a thread about how the beach chair rental guys at some of their resorts will not let you put your chairs in front of their rental ones or they get angry if you try. Is this also the case in PCB? My kids would definitely be up front and might have the smaller, lower beach chairs even if I had the resort chairs. Also, I would probably bring my smaller Land's End beach chair up there and join them. Would this be an issue? I don't see what the problem would be unless I stuck a big umbrella in front of people. Also, the rental chairs seem very far back since I like to have my feet in the water!

We are stuck deciding between Destin or PCB at the moment, and as far as PCB I am looking at Treasure Island or Seychelles. 2 destinations mentioned in this post I stay at Sunset Inn and I know there are people that brings their own chairs down to the beach all the time. I've never heard anyone say anything to them. You just paid how much to stay at their condo? Is there anything in the contract that says you can't put your chair next to the water or use any part of the beach? I would tell them to p*** off. Better yet, call the condo and ask them if they have any rules about where you put your chair. That will give you an idea before you sign the dotted line. The condo owns the property, not the beach chair rental guys. The thread actually says something about how a certain footage near the water is public, but I just don't want to have any issues with the rental chair guys regardless since I'm on vacation!Well, the beach is public up to the high tide line. I still wouldn't put an umbrella up in front of other people there, but they have no basis for complaining if you plop your chair down there.

If I were concerned about it, I would still call that condo complex and see if they have a policy about it. Just get it straight from them rather than opinions like mine. Thanks, and yeah I would never put an umbrella up in front of anyone! That has been an issue in Destin, but we have never had a problem in PCB. Have stayed at both Treasure Island and Seychelles and loved them both. Treasure Island does not have a hot tub if that matters to you. I try to treat other people as I would want to be treated. There is room enough on the beach for everyone one to have a good "spot". I would never put my gear in front of anyone. I think it's more that they don't want people who haven't rented chairs to put their stuff in front of people who have rented chairs. We always take up the space in front of our rented chairs/umbrellas with towels and lower chairs that we put right in the water. We do get miffed if someone else comes and sets up right in front of us between us and the water, especially if they have an umbrella.

My personal opinion is that paying for the chairs and umbrella includes paying for the view and the access to the water. We have never had a problem with putting our own stuff in front of our rented chairs, but, the beach rental guys usually don't make a big deal if someone else camps out in front of us - we sort of have to "police" that ourselves (in a nice way). That's another reason to stay in one of the houses you're looking at on Clipper Cove in Destin, soccermommy. We have used that same access and have never seen rental companies setting up any chairs. First come, first serve at the beach for everyone there! I'll have to look for that thread you're talking about. We've never had that problem. Yes that sounds like a beach area we would like, and we are definitely going to stay in Clipper Cove. Do you know how early you should get there before that area on the beach starts getting crowded?
