And on a truly heartbreaking personal level — her two-year-old nephew drowned in a backyard pool nine years ago.So when a terrifying incident occurred with her very own daughter, 12-year-old Hollie, on Christmas Day, she knew it was vital to warn other parents about what could have been if she wasn’t close by to help.Anthea bought Hollie and her 10-year-old son Cooper a Now Lounger — a popular air lounger — for Christmas.

They took them to Anthea’s friend’s place, who is also a paramedic and has a pool. The terrified mother explains what she and her friend saw when they were sitting by the side of the pool.“Hollie wasn’t jumping in it or anything. She was just sitting in it and floating when suddenly she seemed to disappear down the middle of it. We both saw it happen and at first thought ‘what the hell? Where did she go?’ Then she emerged with her face and body engulfed in the coloured outer lining, which had vacuum sealed to her face,” she explains. In a panic, Hollie, who is a strong swimmer, yelled out “Mum, help! I can’t breathe and I can’t get out!”This was when Anthea and her friend immediately raced to the edge of the pool.“Thankfully she was only about one metre away from the edge, so we told her to come to the edge but she said ‘I can’t see. I don’t know where the edge is’. We told her to follow our voice and she was able to make her way over to us,” Anthea explains.

“Together we both tried to lift the waterlogged material from her which was surprisingly heavy for a parachute type of lightweight material. We managed to untangle her and take it off her head.”Anthea can’t help but think of what could have been if she wasn’t nearby when Hollie got into serious trouble.“Luckily we were by the pool supervising,” she says. “If Hollie had been half a metre further towards the deep end without footing I would have been in the pool that quickly as I think it may have been a different story.”Another Australian family witnessed a disturbingly similar incident — also on Christmas Day.Julie Kosy was so mortified by what happened to her father that she also shared the ordeal on her Facebook page to warn others. Julie’s post has had the desired effect with as many as 17,500 people sharing it.“Do NOT use on water!! My dad almost drowned on Christmas Day with our new Now Lounger. It turned inside out, then flipped, encasing him face down in the pool totally wrapped in liner and suffocating.”

She also posted a photo of her dad only moments before the horrifying experience.“Several seconds after this picture was taken he was thrashing about fighting for air. It was absolutely terrifying.”Both Anthea and Julie point out that the Now Loungers come with no instructions or warnings.“I purchased four of these online through a Facebook ad as Christmas presents and they all came in bags with no boxes or instructions/warnings,” Julie posted.“The Now Lounger website and Facebook page both feature customers using these on water — both pool and ocean.”Anthea agrees that if the product was not supposed to be used on water there should have been suitable warnings.“The site I bought it off have posted some user pics where it is being used on water — so you can understand how the public might think it’s safe to use in water.”“I’m sure they are safe enough on land but there needs to be clear warnings about water use, — which they clearly are not!“I thought because I’d got one with a “name” or “brand” I was doing the responsible thing and not buying a cheap nasty one.”

The Now Lounger motto is “relax anywhere, anytime” on the website. The beds are currently being sold at 53 per cent off in a new year special.Kidspot is yet to hear back from Now Lounger but Anthea was offered a replacement from the US company.“They offered to send me another one, provided I could provide them with my email receipt and a photo of it. I initially wanted a replacement so Hollie could use it on land but now I’m not so sure — I don’t think I want one now.”“As a paramedic I don’t want to be called out to someone else’s tragedy because of the marketing of these products.”This article originally appeared on Kidspot.Living Room Decor Above CouchIkea Home Living RoomAbove Sofa DecorShelves Above SofaGrey Corner Sofa Living RoomsSofa ShelvingShelves In Living RoomSofa ShelfNarrow ShelvingForwardlove the narrow shelving above this sofa in this living room, great gallery look to display your photosQuality products for over 100 years Outdoor Umbrella & Furniture
