Nike has re-launched the Nike Zvezdochka Shoe — a design by award-winning industrial designer Marc Newson — initially released in 2004. The shoe is inspired by what he saw astronauts wearing at the Russian Space Institute. Even the name was taken from a Russian dog sent into space in 1961. The shoe has a modular design with four interchangeable parts, to combine them together or separately, depending on the use and the environment: the injection-molded TPU outer cage, the interlocking outsole, the inner sleeve, and the insole. The Nike Zvezdochka Shoe will be re-launched in its original five colours through Nike’s NIKELAB locations and online from last December, marking its tenth anniversary. Despite being named the Air Max 2017, this brand new low-top model from Nike debut back in November 2016. Fortunately, Nike has big plans for 2017 in the form of countless releases. The biggest news is the return of LeBron James’ signature sneaker, the Nike Air Zoom Generation “First Game.” Even before it officially makes its comeback, StockX is holding auctions for 23 pairs of the Air Zoom Generation along with 23 pairs of the LeBron 14. 2017 also marks a fresh new collaboration between Nike and Supreme, which involves the Air More Uptempo. Initially, it was uncertain as to what the Supreme x Nike Air Uptempo would look like, but now Bleacher Report seems to have shared photos of the actual sneaker on Instagram. Nike may have also whipped a brand new, similar-looking Air Max Flair iterations that features bold AIR graphics on the sides like those of the Uptempo silhouette. While it may not seem to mean much to sneakerheads, Nike has named British artist FKA Twigs the new creative director for their Spring 2017 campaign.

For those who are familiar her art and style, they expect plenty of exuberant-looking releases in the coming future. Sneakerheads can also look forward to Nike dropping a variety of Special Field Air Force 1 colorways in 2017, four of which have already been unveiled, while the SF-AF1 “String” is on its way too. Nike is re-releasing the Zvezdochka, a line of space-inspired sneakers first designed for the company 10 years ago by Marc Newson, Jony Ive’s BFF and Apple’s newest star designer.

Notice anything about them? They look just like the iPhone 5c case. Got to make you wonder if the iPhone 5c case was designed by Newson, don’t you think? In a piece I wrote over at Co.Design, I point out the resemblance: To my mind, the shoes look nearly identical to Apple’s iPhone 5c case. Which is interesting, because it makes me wonder if Newson quietly designed the iPhone 5c case for Apple over a year before it was announced that he’d be joining Apple’s design team. In an interview with Dezeen, Newson says that this “particular shoe has spawned a lot of other interesting concepts.” Maybe the iPhone 5c case was one of them? I actually think it’s more than likely that Newson did design the iPhone 5c case for Apple. When it was unveiled last year, the aesthetic was just completely different from Apple’s, yet it conforms to a design language — first adopted by Newson with the Zvezdochkas for Nike — that Newson has returned to again and again. What do you think?
