A behemoth of a job, the living room transformation took time, sure, but its realization was so worth the heartache and drama through which we lived for several, gritty months. Whilst other aspects of the cottage changed dramatically (layout, room size, etc.) the great room’s shape remained — for the most part, certainly — as it was when we found it.

That said, a sequence of new windows, décor, flooring, furniture and finishes brought the lacklustre space alive.  Indeed where darkness once prevailed, there is now light. And in a space once redolent of the past, a joyous mood proudly points towards a brighter future. At 25 feet high, and with coursing cathedral ceilings, the living room is huge. But of course with huge reno’s come potentially huge problems. The rickety, weather beaten windows were literally falling from their frames (and therefore beyond salvation) the floor was rotten in places and the ceiling cladding had little or no insulation between it and the external boards. So our contracting soldiers set to work until only rafters, floor joists and fresh air remained. If a job’s worth doing, an’ all… Being that the lake facing elevation was structurally unsound — it literally shook when pushed — the first task was to construct a whole new wall to accommodate replacement Euro Vinyl (www.evw.ca) black framed windows.

Quite why the previous glazing hadn’t fallen free of its rickety supports is anyone’s guess. With the windows replaced, and an insulated roof built, structural integrity was immediately corrected. Next task was lining the ceiling with pine, stained in a lovely walnut tone. The resultant mood whispers ‘Mid Mod’, a direction that provided inspiration for our furniture inventory, all of which was chosen to compliment the Kentwood ‘Barbican’ flooring. Visual continuity courtesy of flooring (in this case it connects the living room, dining area and kitchen as well as both downstairs bedrooms) is a trusted C&J trick that helps ‘flow’ and perceived proportions. ) whose attention to detail is astounding. Take a tip: never scrimp on fitting (employ the best tradesperson you can find), especially when you’ve shelled out for top grade product such as Kentwood. As far as décor is concerned, white painted drywall areas provide schematic ‘pop’ as the eye travels: perhaps not the preserve of traditional cottage design, the polar detail, nonetheless, adds undeniable crispness.

Centre stage is a cross framed wood table, and a brown leather sofa from Urban Barn (www.urbanbarn.ca). Had you asked us, even a year back, if we’d ever specify a tan hide chesterfield for a personal project, we’d have been uncertain, but we’ve grown to love the warm tones of this beauty — a perfect foil to all the black, white, red and woodsy aspects that appear elsewhere. Artemano came up trumps for the live edged wooden dining table, an organic slab (set on steel legs) whose honey complexion is further enhanced with Hans Wegner style ‘Wishbone’ chairs from MFKTO in Toronto — the same source, in fact, as our kitchen stools and the teak and black leather chairs that sit either side of the fireplace. Check out www.mfkto.ca for more info. ) which whir silently above, assuring cool air even on muggy days. The rehabilitation of our cottage — from collapsing slanty shanty to proud Grey Gardens — has been a joy to master. Sure, it almost killed us, but the dramatic results make up for all the pain and stress we suffered.

It’s been fun affording you guys a first peek at each week’s upcoming episode. But now it’s done! Thank you, so much, for your support and encouragement along the way: be assured we never take your interest or readership for granted. Guess we’d also like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to the show’s principal contactor — and now good friend — Randy Blain (and his epic team of boys) for bringing our dream alive. Without them, all this would have been so much less. We’d also like to thank the good people of Haliburton for welcoming us into their community with open arms. We are blessed to have found our spot of heaven on earth… And so, the Cabin Pressure cauldron bubbled down to a gentle simmer, we’ll be turning our attentions to ‘regular’ makeover transformations — expect a plethora of weekly inspiration. From back splits to condos and from town homes to suburban ranch bungalows, we’ve got your back, going forward.
