Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be. So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.      One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.      It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.      Well, we'll soon find that out, thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom;

then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.      On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.      "Oh, very badly!" said she. "I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds. Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.      So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.      There, that is a true story. Prying a stuck pillow out of the crack between your mattress and headboard at 3 a.m. is enough to make you believe in monsters under the bed.

But in all seriousness, that pesky gap could be more than a minor annoyance; it might be a safety hazard where small children are concerned. Many deaths occur each year when kids get their necks caught between mattresses and parts of bunk beds or cribs, but they are at risk with adult beds, too. Getting small arms pinched is no laughing matter either, but solving this problem is an easy fix. Check Your Mattress If your mattress is a bunk-bed size and the bed frame is an extra-long twin, or the mattress is a queen size but the bed frame is for a full-sized bed -- or any other mismatch in mattress and frame sizes -- you will have a gap. Mattresses in the United States come in standard sizes. Mattresses should be the size specified for the bed frame. If yours is the wrong size, get a new mattress. Block The Gap When a new mattress is just not in the budget, consider bridging the gap -- at least until you can afford a new mattress. For the sturdiest fix, simply screw one or more 2-inch-thick boards against the headboard at the height of the top of the mattress to fill in the space.

The number of boards you use depends on how wide the gap is. If you prefer, you could push the mattress all the way up to the headboard and fasten the stop-gap board(s) to the footboard instead. Pad the Headboard For a pretty decor fix that also is a real fix, add padding in the form of upholstered foam to the front of the headboard. This works well for small gaps and keeps pillows in place, as well as provides new life to an old headboard. However, be aware the gap is there, merely hidden under and impeded by all the protruding upholstery. This should not be used to fix children's beds or those of people unable to care for themselves. In those cases, for safety's sake, a properly fitted mattress or solid block are the only acceptable remedies. Toss the Headboard A headboard is not necessary. Platform beds rarely sport them, and even when they do, the board usually is fixed to the wall rather than the bed frame. If you don't want to spend money on a new mattress and won't miss the headboard, toss it.
