All were out of a job. The school’s students have been left hanging. Everest, which also has two Ontario campuses, is part of the Corinthian chain of for-profit technical schools. In November, Corinthian sold 56 Everest and Wyotech colleges to Zenith Education Group. Most of the remaining 28 colleges were in California. Those schools all shut their doors Monday. The closure came two weeks after the company was fined $30 million by the U.S. Education Department for misleading students, falsifying job-placement rates and questionable loan practices. The action leaves approximately 16,000 students in California, Hawaii, Oregon, Arizona and New York with no Corinthian classes to attend. A letter attributed to Corinthian chairman and CEO Jack Massimino that was posted on Corinthian’s website said he didn’t believe the campuses needed to be shut down. “Overall, our schools did a good job for the students they served,” the statement said. “We made every effort to address regulators’ concerns in good faith.
Neither our Board of Directors, our management, our faculty, nor our students believe these schools deserved to be forced to close.” But California Attorney General Kamala Harris weighed in with a statement that read in part, “Corinthian continued to deceive its students to the end. Closure of these campuses should help students get out from under the mountains of debt Corinthian imposed upon them through its lies.” Harris added that Corinthian “preyed on the educational dreams of vulnerable people such as low-income individuals, single mothers and veterans by misleading students and investors about job placement rates and course offerings.” Student Amber Moore, 29, of San Bernardino, said she was surprised to receive an email Sunday notifying her of the closure. She said she was angry. “They’re just going to discontinue everybody’s education,” Moore said. Moore said she had just finished the second of seven modules necessary for a certificate to work as a medical administrative assistant.
