Item # 416443 Model # CDR-08 This clean-out door features a matte black finish Features hinged doors with a single bolt closure for safety and easy use 8" x 8" opening Community Q & APaint a cleanout door to match the masonry on a chimney. Cleanout doors provide access to the ash drop below the firebox in masonry fireplaces. The door installs in the exterior wall of the chimney and allows you to remove creosote and ash that accumulate in the chimney over time. Adding a chimney cleanout door requires cutting the opening and installing a manufactured door that’s designed to prevent cool air from entering the chimney. The doors are available through online sources and at many building supply stores. The size of a cleanout door is based on the dimensions of the fireplace and the chimney. Determine the elevation – location – of the ash drop. Typically, the drop is 12 or 14 inches below the bottom of the fireplace. If necessary, use a common reference, such as the bottom of a nearby window or door to establish the location.

Position the flanges of the door unit against the chimney at the correct location, with the hinges and handle for the door positioned properly. Mark an outline of the flanges on the face of the masonry with a felt-tip marker. Set the door aside. Use a framing square as a straight edge to mark another outline a 1/4 inch larger than the first outline. This allows room for mortar that holds the door in place. Set up a power drill or rotary hammer with a 1/2-inch diameter masonry drill bit. Put on safety glasses and a dust mask. Drill 1/2-inch holes through the masonry at each corner of the larger outline. Cut the masonry along the lines of the larger outline with a masonry cutting tool or circular saw fitted with a diamond blade. Put on work gloves. Remove the masonry at the area of the door opening with a brick chisel and hammer. Insert the tip of the chisel in each mortar joint and strike the other end of the chisel with the hammer to dislodge each piece of masonry. Remove residual mortar or bits of masonry from the inside edges and corners of the opening with the chisel and hammer.

Slide the door fully into the opening. Use a circular saw or handsaw to cut a piece of 2-by-6-inch lumber as a diagonal brace that holds the door in place while the mortar cures. The upper end of the brace fits under the handle or the upper hinge on the door. The lower end is braced at the ground. Set the brace aside for now. Mix a batch of mortar to medium consistency in a 5-gallon bucket. Use a pointer trowel to mix the batch thoroughly. Apply a 1/4-inch-thick uniform layer of mortar on the bottom edge and both sides of the opening with the pointer trowel. Apply another layer of mortar on the upper flange of the chimney door. Slide the door fully into place in the opening. Install the diagonal brace. Remove residual mortar at the outer edges of the door unit with the trowel. Allow the mortar to cure overnight before removing the brace and opening the door.
