But after watching Paralympians win gold medals at London 2012, she overhauled her unhealthy lifestyle and set herself on an incredible new path. Next month, she will be competing at the Paralympics in Rio. Her journey began when the former Ashton-on-Mersey High School student, who has cerebral palsy, joined Stockport Harriers and started training every day.

After four years of hard work, she will be representing Great Britain in T34 wheelchair racing. Carly, 30, from Sale, recently took home silver medals in the 2016 IPC Athletics European Championships and is dreaming of repeating her success in Brazil. She previously worked full-time as a marketing manager for The Co-op and has been granted a sabbatical to achieve her Paralympic dream. Before London 2012, Carly said she smoked, rarely participated in sports and would spend her spare time in pubs or bars. But now she has given up the fags and alcohol, instead training every day at the racing track, gym, or at home - only allowing herself one rest day a week to catch up friends. It has been an emotional rollercoaster for Carly as she initially did not make the list of British track and field athletes selected by the British Paralympic Association. But two days later she was added to the squad after two additional slots were made available. She also recently starred alongside Ellie Simmonds and Hannah Cockcroft in the Channel 4 We’re the Superhumans advert for the Paralympic Games.

Carly, who now lives in Baguley, told the M.E.N: “It’s unbelievable and I have to pinch myself that this is really happening. “Going to Rio was a bit of a fairytale goal I set myself when I went to the Olympic Park in 2012, I just thought ‘if they can, I can.’ “But to even set the wheels in motion was difficult it was difficult to find information, a club, I didn’t know anything about sport or fitness so I really did have to start at the very bottom, learn the basics and keep practicing and practising. “It was incredibly frustrating and even painful at times but I just kept thinking about the start line at Rio and eventually things got easier. “To get the call to say I had finally achieved that dream was honestly surreal, especially because I was initially told I hadn’t made the team a few days before. It was like it was meant to be.” Carly is advising disabled people who want to take up sport to research local clubs and to make sure to ‘stick at it’. She said: “I like to think you get out what you put in and I was completely rubbish when I first started, I was very unfit and pushing a wheelchair was not easy. “
