All you need to do is wipe it down rather than washing it. Gauge what level of absorbency you need, so you'll know how thick of a mattress pad you'll need. Compare materials of the mattress pad options you are choosing. Avoid letting price be the biggest factor when choosing a pad. Search the Internet for sales or bargains on the mattress pad you select. If you live in a more tropical or hotter region, consider buying a polyurethane mattress pad instead of a vinyl option.
While slightly more expensive, polyurethane is considered a "breathable" material because it doesn't trap body heat the way a vinyl pad might. Reusable pads need to be cleaned regularly to prevent long-lasting odors or potential stains. Make it a practice to clean up accidents as soon as possible, and wash it as you would bed linens to help the pad last as long as possible. The mattress pad you select should fit snugly, like a second skin, over the top of your mattress. Machine washing or drying may cause fiber separation and shrinkage of wool to occur.
Be sure to wash on cold and line dry. It is no problem to make a particular custom size. Simply order a larger size and add comments in the shopping cart specifying the size you want yours cut to.
