It amuses us to think that Charles Eames may have been kicked out of Washington University for being "too modern". Of course that's the same quality for which his life is celebrated. Bernice Alexandra "Ray" Kaiser (1912-1988) met Charles Eames (1907-1978) while studying. They married in 1941. As a filmmaker, artist and designer Ray was oriented towards her interest in the abstract qualities of ordinary items. Their shared talent enabled success in a number of experimental projects. One landmark project was the Case Study House for Art & Architecture Magazine. The home was designed by the couple for their own use in California. The bold, minimal design with Mondrian-style colour accents was considered to be the most successful output of the Case Study series. In furniture the Eames duo designed using organic, sculptural forms and offered pieces with integrity. The family owned company is still based there. Vitra is one of the most renowned and well known manufacturers of design furniture. In 1957 Vitra began to produce furniture by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. Today Vitra continue to manufacture these furniture classics, but have grown to embrace many more things. The direction of Vitra's work is guided by 'the project'. It is based on the conviction that everyday life holds great potential for inspiration and aesthetic enjoyment, and that design can discover and develop this potential.
Vitra manifests itself on different levels: in the company's products and interior concepts, in its architecture, collections, museum, methods of communication, and its approach to both designers and users.
