Actor Kevin Brand found the swan with its beak frozen solid and alerted emergency services, but both firefighters and water police declined to act. Brand and another passerby, florist and DJ Cristofaro Salvato, then carried out the rescue themselves, using a kayak, a hammer, and hot water to free the bird. Firefighters later arrived and took the swan to a hospital.
