Casper deals in what is probably one of the least cool businesses around — selling mattresses. And that’s why Philip Krim, Casper’s chief executive and co-founder, says there is an opportunity. “Right now, the experience of trying to buy a mattress in a store is awful,” said Mr. Krim, whose company announced on Thursday that it had raised a $13.1 million round of venture financing. “Salesmen try to upsell you. You don’t know the difference between one mattress over the other. It doesn’t work,” he said. Mr. Krim has opted not to target baby boomers with a chain of retail storefronts selling high-end orthopedic mattresses, a strategy for large companies like Mattress Firm.
Instead, he and his team of 20 employees have taken the entire business online, an effort to target a younger demographic. For instance, customers are asked to visit and shop on Casper’s website, which is replete with attractive people lounging on the company’s mattresses. The mattresses themselves are relatively inexpensive. The cheapest, a twin sleeper, is $500, while a California King is about $950. And in perhaps the most alluring feature for young shoppers, who are particularly big fans of text messages and on-demand delivery services, almost no human interaction is required. Click and pay, and the mattress is shipped free to anywhere in the continental United States in one to five days. Taking the physical element out of shopping for a mattress may seem counterintuitive. The majority of the multibillion-dollar mattress industry continues to sell mattresses in physical stores so that customers can get a feel for the product before opening their wallets. Other new online retailers, however, have found success in getting people to buy personal items that they used to first try in stores.
Warby Parker, the web-based eyeglasses start-up, mails its customers five pairs of frames to try on at home at no cost; customers try them on to decide which pair, if any, they want to buy, then send the glasses back to the company. Casper takes a similar approach. Buyers have up to 100 days to decide if they like sleeping on their mattress. If not, the company sends a courier to pick up the bed, then arranges to have the used mattress donated. And if customers still don’t feel entirely comfortable with zero human interaction during the process, they can chat online or call Casper customer service, or tweet with the company’s sassy Twitter handler. The company’s beginnings are still humble. Right now, a small percentage of mattress sales in the United States are online-only, and Casper is just a small fraction of those sales. Mr. Krim remains bullish, saying each month’s sales at the company have outpaced the previous ones. With the new round of funding — which was led by New Enterprise Associates, or NEA, a venture capital firm, and participated in by a host of others, including Lerer Hippeau Ventures and SV Angel — the company plans to hire and expand aggressively.
