India is one the notable landmass in the world. It's been a great country for more than 1500 years. Since the beginning of civilization till now, we have innovated many architectural concepts to the world.

Kalinga Architecture

India as a country divided into three cultures

  • Northern East Architectural Culture
  • Northern West Architectural Culture &
  • Dravidian Culture

Apart from the above two, dravidian culture is solely unique because it never combined any european, persian and arabic architectures. The designers and architects built it from scratch for thousands of years without other cultural influence.

  • Mughal Architecture
  • Indo - Saracenic Revival Architecture

  • Kalinga Architecture
  • Sikh Architecture
  • Vesara Architecture

Cave Architecture:

Cave Architecture came to existence more than 10,000 years ago. But those days humans lived in their cave for just survival purposes. Architectural designs never popped up in their living.

Later the evolution from human beings, they built the construction with purpose and architectural designs.

Ellora Caves is the most popular cave architecture in the world. The structures are built from solid natural rock. These caves are also used to keep shrines and deities.

Based on the religion there are three types of Caves Architectures

  • Buddhist Cave Architecture
  • Hindu Cave Architecture
  • Jain Cave Architecture

Temple Architecture:

If you want to go deep in indian temple architecture, the types and styles are more than 100. I will discuss about the major three types

  • Northern Style i.e, Nagara
  • Dravidian Style Architecture
  • Vesara which is 70% Dravidian and 30% Nagara

As I said temples designs and styles vary from region to region. If you see the meenakshi temple, the construction is very rigid and tough. These buildings have stood for more than 1000+ years. Which are architectural marvels. There is no doubt about that. Let's go further about the types.

Nagara Temple Architecture (Northern Style):

Nagar architectures are majorly found in the region like odisha, border of karnataka and some eastern part of india. They mainly construct the temples with Shikhara, Sanctorum and Mandapam.

Dravidian Style Architecture:

Dravidian Temple structures are unique, the only cultural style which was never influenced by other cultures. Kings and Rajas cared more about the temples. Chera, Chola and Pandya who were majorly ruled Dravidian region. It doesn’t matter who is ruling, they usually do add on construction for the temples without any ego.

Usually Dravidian Temples are very unique, they use single rock structures and they do additional care for building statues.

Vesara Style:

Everyone in this field knows how vesara style architecture has evolved. This style is a combination of Nagara and Dravidian Architecture. The temples built in this style will have been sharp in the top apart from that every architectural design looks similar to Nagara and Dravidian Styles.

Conclusion:

Indian architecture has a diverse culture. Visiting north india and then visiting south india will look very different. Sometimes we might even think that we are in a different country. All around the world no other country has got this architectural differentiation except India.
