It explores the photographer's dysfunctional family and alcoholic father (Ray) in an exceptionally gritty, powerful way. The cover encapsulates the bizarre emotion and ambiguity of the work. You can't really tell if Richard's father is crying or laughing, or both. Also, one of my favorite (and really bizarre) photos from the series: Of course everyone has his/her own personal taste in photography and the there have been made a lot of great books.A  good starting point to find out what you might like is buying some  reference works about photography books, like one of these: The Photobook: A History (I) - Martin Parr and Garry BadgerThe Photobook: A History (II) - Martin Parr and Garry BadgerThe Company Fotoboek 1945-1965 - Mirell ThijsenThe open book - Andrew RothBook of 101 Books, The: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century - Andrew RothThe Latin American photobook - Horacio FernandezCover photo - The Dutch Documentary Fotoboek After 1945 Some of my own

Please note: I am not recommending these books. I’m sure they’re great, but for the purpose of this conversation I’m just talking about the covers :)Another style I like is when the cover itself is an awesome photo, like the one from “Planet Earth: As You've Never Seen It Before.”These types of covers simply draw you in. And they make me want to touch the book and open it up to see what’s inside. I think that’s what makes a cover great or not.Luckily, there are many great photo book printing services out there today, which can help you create such covers at a fraction of the price they used to cost a few years ago.I personally know that the team at AdoramaPix is capable of such “feats of strength.” :)Let me search for the link… Ah, here it is! /app/pr...I hope this helped you find some solid inspiration.Have a wonderful day!RobertP.S.: Disclosure: I work with them.Belgian artist Tom Haentjens has united 100 artists from 28 countries in a co-creation project, Doedemee to help raise awareness of illiteracy in Africa.
