Warner Bros. has unveiled its master plan for its upcoming Lego movies, staking out release dates for the next three movies in the franchise. The Lego Batman Movie, which, at this stage, is untitled, will be the first new Lego movie out of the gate and will open Feb. 10, 2017. The date hews closely to the Feb. 7, 2014, opening of The Lego Movie, the surprise hit that has kicked off a whole new franchise for the studio. Also in 2017, on Sept. 22, Ninjago will hit theaters. The date represents a shift for the movie, which originally was eyeing a release in fall 2016. Finally, The Lego Movie Sequel — yes, that is the title — will open May 18, 2018. The new date pushes up the movie by a week. “These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come,” said Dan Fellman, the studio’s domestic distribution president. At this stage, the only competition for the Feb. 10, 2017, date is Fox’s romantic drama The Mountain Between Us, which is set to star Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike.

The other two dates are in the clear so far. Warners found itself with a brand new franchise after the surprisingly massive success of The Lego Movie. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie made $468.7 million worldwide. The Lego Movie, an animated film shot in Australia, has made US$69.1m (A$77m) in its opening weekend at the US box office, February’s second biggest opening, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film was made by the Sydney-based digital-effects studio Animal Logic over the past two years for producers Warner Bros and Village Roadshow. Its chief executive, Zareh Nalbandian, said: “There were genuine challenges as to how you make an emotive, fun movie with Lego characters but still keep the authenticity. “It just reinforces our story and it’s worth saying we do create amazing content in Australia and sometimes Australians don’t even realise what we do here. “It’s a credit to the artistry and ambition of Australian filmmakers and I do feel like it shows the opportunity and promise for the industry to make content for the world.”

The film features Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt), an ordinary “blockhead”, who is mistaken for a master builder – an anarchic construction expert capable of working at great speed on any design in the Lego universe, even the ones that need adult supervision. Meanwhile, the evil Lego tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell) is plotting to glue the world together. Emmet, with fellow pieces voiced by Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks and Jonah Hill, must click in place a plan to stop him. The Hollywood Reporter said the success of the film had become an “instant franchise”, meaning more animated work could be brought to Australia. The movie has achieved the biggest opening weekend this year. It builds on the success of last year’s Frozen (US$67.3m) and Despicable Me 2 (US$83.5m) to suggest that children’s animation is still a huge market for Hollywood studios. A breakdown of the film’s audience, though, suggests it’s not just kids and their parents heading to the cinemas: 59% of the weekend’s viewers were over 18, and males made up 55% of the audience.

The Lego Movie is released in Australia on April 3.On February 10 2017, audiences around the world will be sitting down in cinemas to watch the much anticipated LEGO: Batman movie. 48 days later, Australians can do the same. Village Roadshow is repeating history, making the same mistake it made with The LEGO Movie. A five million dollar mistake. A mistake co-CEO Graham Burke said the distributor would not be making again. @BrickingAround LEGO Batman will be released in Australia on 30th March, 2017. — Roadshow Films (@RoadshowFilms) December 5, 2016 Piracy of The LEGO Movie cost Village Roadshow "somewhere between $3.5 and $5 million in sales" Burke revealed at a government-led Copyright Forum back in September 2014. "We made one hell of a mistake with LEGO," Burke said of the decision to delay The LEGO Movie's release in Australia by 54 days. "We'll now make all our movies day in date with the US. I know 20th Century Fox are and Universal are too."

Adding insult to injury both films were created here by Animal Logic, and the CEO Zareh Nalbandian has spoken out about piracy in the past, expressing a wish to teach kids about the impacts of piracy on creators before they become teenagers and stop caring. So why, two years later, is this happening again? Expect to hear reasons like "school holidays" and "maximising audiences" being floated, but we've reached out to Village Roadshow for an official comment.LEGO, the LEGO logo, the Minifigure, DUPLO, BIONICLE, LEGENDS OF CHIMA, DIMENSIONS, the FRIENDS logo, the MINIFIGURES logo, MINDSTORMS, MIXELS, NINJAGO and NEXO KNIGHTS are trademarks of the LEGO Group. ©2017 the LEGO Group.
