It was a busy weekend at the box-office, as three sequels, or spin-offs, made quite an impression over the three-day period. Breaking out of the pack was The LEGO Batman Movie, which managed to open in first place with a big $55.6 million dollar opening. The spin-off to the mega-success, The LEGO Movie, showed the LEGO franchise is proven commodity and should become an annual mainstay in movie theaters. Second place belonged to Fifty Shades Darker which made an estimated $46.7 million dollars over the weekend, which was well below the $85 million dollar debut of last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey.
However, even the first film had a steep drop-off after its first week, which signals this is a franchise that will continue to diminish its value over time. Keanu Reeves’ signature franchise came back for its second installment with John Wick: Chapter 2. The sequel more than doubled the $14 million dollar opening of John Wick, which was a surprise success in 2014. While the budget for the film has surely increased, so have the returns. It would seem that an eventual trilogy is inevitable. The legend of John Wick truly lives on. Coming in fourth place was M. Knight Shyamalan’s Split. The surprise hit added another estimated $9.3 million dollars to its total while dropping 35% of its audience in the movie’s fourth week of release. Shyamalan is already working on his next project, a sequel to Unbreakable, which should continue to build on Split’s success. In its eighth week of release, Hidden Figures continues its amazing run by adding another $8 million dollars to its total.
The historical drama has already made over $131 million dollars against its $25 million dollar budget. The Academy Awards are still less than two weeks away, which will continue to propel the heartwarmer. So its only a matter of how long it will take for its impressive run to slow down. Le film a été très bien reçu, le site américain Rotten Tomatoes rapportant que 96 % des 222 critiques sélectionnées donnent un avis positif sur le film avec une note moyenne de 8,2 sur 10[10]. De son côté, le site américain Metacritic attribue au film un score de 83 qui se base sur 43 critiques[11]. Du côté de la presse américaine, Entertainment Weekly[12] et The New Yorker[13] mettent en avant le fait que le cinéma d'animation avait cessé de surprendre depuis quelques années, mais qu'avec La Grande Aventure Lego, cet effet de surprise était de retour. Entertainment Weekly souligne un « concept audacieux doté d'une intelligence dix fois supérieure à ce qui était attendu », et résume ainsi la devise du film : « si vous la construisez, la vie peut être géniale ».[12]. Le journal The Guardian poursuit dans cette lignée en qualifiant le film de « joie inattendue », respectant son univers originel tout en proposant une histoire imaginative[14].
Une autre force du film est son aspect visuel totalement spectaculaire, avec une technologie 3D artistiquement bien utilisée[15], comme le souligne le Chicago Sun-Times. Pour ce qui est de l'accueil en France, la presse attribue une note moyenne de 4,1 sur 5 selon le site AlloCiné à partir de 20 titres de presse[16]. Le Parisien qualifie le film de « totalement déjanté », son dynamisme étant salué par la critique, puisqu'« entre course-poursuites haletantes, décors grandioses et cascade de vannes, La Grande Aventure Lego ne laisse aucun répit aux spectateurs, petits ou grands »[17]. Pour aller plus loin dans l'analyse des thèmes abordés, le magazine Première voit dans le film un hommage à la pop culture mais aussi une critique « anti-intégriste » visant les consommateurs de Lego qui se cantonnent à construire les modèles pré-établis sans utiliser leur créativité[18]. Les Inrockuptibles salue également la manière dont le film présente une révolution sociale à travers des clins d’œil à la culture populaire et faits avec des jouets, évoquant ainsi la série Robot Chicken[19].
Le film a donné lieu à une adaptation en jeu vidéo, La Grande Aventure Lego, le jeu vidéo. À la suite du succès du film, Warner Bros. confirme une suite, La Grande Aventure Lego 2[22], qui devrait sortir le 26 mai 2017 aux États-Unis[23]. Elle sera peut-être suivie par un troisième volet[23], dont la sortie est prévue pour le 24 mai 2019[23]. Le réalisateur prévu, Chris McKay [24], est par la suite remplacé par Rob Schrab[24],[25]. Il décide finalement de quitté le film à la suite de « désaccords créatifs »[24]. The Hollywood Reporter dévoile alors un nouveau nom : Mike Mitchell[24], réalisateur de Shrek 4 et de Les Trolls[24], et une nouvelle date, le 13 février 2019[24]. Sort également un film basé sur l'aventure de Batman, qui s'intitule Lego Batman, le film. Réalisé par Chris McKay[26], il sort originellement le 10 février 2017. Un autre film, toujours dans l'univers de La Grande Aventure Lego, basé sur la licence Ninjago, s'intitule Ninjago avec notamment Jackie Chan, Michael Peña et Dave Franco.
