Recently, the company moved into 40,000 square feet of bright, newly renovated space at 747 Pine St. in Burlington’s South End. It also opened an adjoining store, Burlington Mattress, with a separate entrance but shared warehouse and offices.

A bold move, acknowledged Mark Binkhorst, founder and president.“Retail is not for the fainthearted these days,” Binkhorst said. “More than 20 percent of independent furniture companies have gone out of business in the past five years. But we see a future in brick-and-mortar retailing and are passionate about what we do.”Burlington Furniture’s move positioned the company for continued growth, while retaining a commitment to the city and neighborhood where it had established strong roots. Both were important to Binkhorst.“We had experienced double-digit growth through the Great Recession by stepping up to the plate and being assertive when others were feeling less inclined,” he said. “We were able to gain market share and obtain access to several important brands that gave us a unique selling opportunities.” Still, Binkhorst said the company had to address street presence, street credibility and inadequate parking.“We took a look at our business plan from a strategic perspective,“ he said.

“We had a great team and strong product offering, but struggled with our visibility and brand identity.” He said a brand awareness exercise with Place Creative indicated that, for some customers, the Burlington Furniture’s logo better suited its original name, Burlington Futon. At the same time, its somewhat “hidden” location at 388 Pine St. and inadequate parking confused some customers and frustrated others. The location and small storefront did not accurately reflect the size of the store or the quality of the products available inside. Some customers just could not find the location and, when they did, struggled with parking. It was time to move.“After growing organically for 32 years, it was time to move to the next level,” Binkhorst said. “It was important to us to stay in Burlington. Our name is Burlington Furniture, we are a Burlington company and our success is based on being a part of this vital community that has supported us all these years. We did not want to move outside of Burlington.

Luckily, we were able to find a new home just down the block in a building undergoing significant redevelopment by Cresta Cooper Nedde.”Binkhorst said his team put a great deal of effort into visioning the new store. “We took trips to Boston, New York and Montreal to study other stores and learn what elements were important to successful home furnishing retailing, and took stock of our present model to see what we wanted to take forward and what to leave behind.” He said while there is still a lot of unpacking to do, he is pleased with the result.“This building and location offers a significant improvement in visibility, and we now have adequate parking,” Binkhorst said. “The design of the building created by Scott and Partners was consistent with our contemporary and modern offering of home furnishing.”The new furniture showroom offers such lines as American Leather, Palliser, Natuzzi, McCreary Modern, Younger, Stressless You, Fjords and Four Hands. As proprietor of a locally owned company, Binkhorst emphasized a commitment to sustainability and to other Vermont companies.

He said Burlington Furniture also represents five local Vermont companies: Copeland Furniture, Lyndon Furniture, Maple Corner Woodworks, Hubbardton Forge and Nordic.“A new area for us is our commitment to create Vermont’s largest lighting store within our showroom,” Binkhorst said. “We have created galleries with Hubbardton Forge, Visual Comfort, Pablo, Koncept and more still to come. We are lucky to have Nancy Badami as our lighting guru, previously with Conant Light and Metal, join us in creating this concept.”Given its history with futons, Binkhorst said his company has always sold primary sleep surfaces, and expressed excitement about the attached Burlington Mattress store.“We now have a 5,000-square-foot specialized sleep store focused on providing solutions in achieving a good night’s sleep,” Binkhorst said. ”Shelly O’Brien, formally of Good Night Moon, and Bill Hunter bring lots of experience to our new store. So, while we like to say, ‘we’ve been putting our customers to sleep for 32 years,’ now we can do it in a fresh, clean and well-thought-out environment.”

Speaking of environment, Binkhorst also stressed his company’s commitment to a “triple bottom line” that includes environment and community. “Our roof has a solar array that will provide 100 percent of our electricity for the year,” he said. He also mentioned efficiency in lighting and heating, as well as a partnership with the Nature Conservancy. In the community, Burlington Furniture partners with COTS (Committee on Temporary Shelter) and Habitat for Humanity, and remains proud of its ongoing connection to the city’s South End. “It is exciting to remain on Pine Street as it continues to develop, and to be a catalyst for growth,” Binkhorst said, noting his company has doubled its staff with the move.Ultimately, Binkhorst said, while his company once relished being a bit under the radar as Burlington’s “hidden furniture boutique,” the new location reflects a strategic decision that, “it was time to go big, or time to go home.”Embracing the new store, Binkhorst said, “We are proud of our roots as a futon store and have clearly grown to being the destination for contemporary furniture in Vermont.
