The Montreal-based Cavalia entertainment company has announced its equestrian theatrical show “Odysseo” will return to Orange County this holiday season. On Wednesday, Cavalia’s crews raised the show’s signature White Big Top, the world’s largest touring tent, at an empty dirt lot along Laguna Canyon Road. This will be the first time “Odysseo” stops at the same location twice within one calendar year, Cavalia spokesman Eric Paquette said. The previous tour in Irvine, from February to April, drew more than 90,000 spectators.
“Southern California is a very good market for us,” Paquette said, adding Irvine is a convenient location for those driving from Los Angeles and San Diego. Cavalia creator and artistic director Normand Latourelle described “Odysseo” as “the first 6-D show in the world.” The two-hour extravaganza combines equestrian and aerial stunts, theatrical and musical arts and high-tech effects to create an atmosphere similar to a Hollywood-style movie set. “You don’t feel like you are in a tent,” Paquette said. The interactions between human and horse are at the center of the action. Sixty-five horses and 48 riders, acrobats, dancers and musicians perform on the main stage, which is larger than the ice rink at Honda Center. Paquette said “Odysseo” is like Cirque du Soleil with horses. “But much more than that,” he added. The White Big Top, the main tent, is big enough to cover an NFL football field. Supported by three arches, the 125-foot-tall tent will feature the main stage, backstage, lobby, food stands, a gift shop and bleachers for up to 2,000 spectators.
