Shop All On the Goour newest piece of furniture: the anka highchair Like choosing a crib, picking out a highchair was a big decision. We considered skipping it entirely and just doing some kind of booster seat thing, until I started looking around and my design-lust kicked in. After much debate, we opted for the brand new Anka chair from Svan of Sweden. I knew we wanted a wooden chair, rather than a big ol’ plastic one. First, we looked at the original Svan — but I didn’t love the round base. Then we oggled the Tripp Trapp but we wanted something with a tray (at least right now). Then, lo and behold, Svan introduced the Anka, which fit all of our needs. It’s wooden but comes with an easy-to-wash tray and cushion. It’s compact and can fold when not in use. And, it’s more affordable than other options ($180). I’ll let you know how it works as Isadora grows, but as you can see from the photo above, it’s already a big hit! Click here to see more. In case you’re wondering, that’s a palette of sweet potato and avocado on the bib.

Call it the Tripp Trapp Effect. To me, a lot of European high chairs look like reactions, responses to, or riffs on Stokke's classic (30+year old) design. They're all wood, with a low base, and have adjustable height seat/footrests. Generations of happy, well-fed Euros might not be wrong, but they might be a bit boring. If you're not totally sold on the original--which is called the Kinderzeat in the US--check out these variations.Amalie, from Troels Grum-Schwensen, a Copenhagen architecture firm. No word on where it's sold, though. Those Danes may make the good furniture, but their distribution networks leave a lot to be desired.Futura, from Kettler, a German manufacturer. The Futura looks like a utilitarian cross between a traditional high chair and a Tripp Trapp. , a US site for European toys. The Svan, by Scandinavian Child, is a high-profile favorite. Its baroque, busy design is fully adjustable, but honestly, there's too much going on here for me. If you're really into it, though, Sparkability has it for $219.

The Kster high chair, meanwhile, takes the style cake. This is one of the fugliest things I've seen. Is that "f" for funky? Sure, if you need it to be, fine. Kster's chair comes in natural beech or colored laminate, and unlike the others on the page, it folds up for easy storage (which is crucial. Into the closet with you, Kster.) In one sense, it looks like no other high chair around, but yet it also looks like it was Frankensteined together from two innocent traditional chairs. Anyway, if $70 or so for shipping isn't enough of a deterrent, you can order one from the UK, for 125.00 for the beech, or 140.00 for the slate laminate with some fugly turquoise cushions. A small amount of wood dust, brass, PVC or other elements on furniture and household items might seem trivial to many. The state of California, however, has taken the issue of ingredients in consumer products to a whole new level with its Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, known as "Proposition 65." Originally, the proposition was intended to protect drinking water sources from chemical contamination.Over the years, however, the scope of the law has exploded. As the Los Angeles Times wrote recently, "Warnings (about Proposition 65) are everywhere: parking lots, hardware stores, hospitals and just about any decent-sized business." Proposition 65 requires warning labels on products that may contain any of 800-plus chemicals or ingredients that the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) lists as a carcinogen or a reproductive toxicant. These include wood dust, brass and a multitude of other everyday elements. A flame retardant upholstery chemical currently required by the state of California to be added to upholstered furniture foams is now included among chemicals that require a warning under Proposition 65.

Many of the elements listed under Proposition 65 are common everyday additives found in products such as jewelry, lamps, ceramic tableware, lead crystal glasses, electric cords, automobiles, beauty products and furniture. Because there is always a chance that wood dust or some other of the hundreds of ingredients listed in Proposition 65 could potentially be on our furniture or packing materials, we must include Proposition 65 warnings on our products or risk large fines under this law in California. In addition, we are required to use the exact wording for this warning specified by California: "This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other We realize that this warning sounds very alarming. However, we want to reassure you based on the findings of reliable research. While there is research that supports health-related risks due to wood dust, this research also finds that the key factor in determining the health risk is the amount of exposure to wood dust.

These hazardous exposure limits are generally found in the workplace when wood is being sawed or sanded, and have not been found to be present on Hooker Furniture products being shipped to our retailers and customers. Ideally, we would have placed these Hooker Furniture warnings only on our furniture products being shipped to California. However, Hooker Furniture, like most furniture companies, builds products in large quantities for stock. At the time of production, we rarely know where each item will ship. We have no alternative except to place these warnings on all of our furniture, whether it ends up in California or not. It is also important for all retailers to leave the warning on the furniture when they are shipping to people in California. The safety of our customers and our employees is of highest priority for Hooker Furniture. We want to assure you of our 90-year commitment to offering among the highest quality and safest products in the industry. As you see from our safety and compliance record noted on this page, we have received recognition and awards for our compliance with environmental and safety regulations and have always abided by state and federal regulations.
