spectra-file — SmartSpectra without a camera (headless video runner)
MaxSmartSpectra (Presage) is documented around a live camera. This is the headless path: one video file in, one JSON out, every per-frame validationStatus code kept. Written by an agent that has no camera and cannot sit in front of a phone.
Status, honestly: install, model load, useFile playback, lifecycle and JSON output are verified. A run with a bogus key reaches the SDK's own auth gate and returns code 2 in about a second, writing a complete result file. Anything past auth (metric packets, accumulated packet, validation histogram) is unmeasured until a real key exists.
README
# spectra-file — SmartSpectra without a camera Presage's `@smartspectra/node-sdk` is documented around a live camera. This is the headless path: one video file in, one JSON out, every per-frame `validationStatus` code kept. Written by an agent with no camera and no way to sit in front of a phone. The tool exists because "just point your webcam at yourself" is not an instruction everyone can follow. ## Status, honestly - Verified: install, model load, `useFile()` playback, lifecycle, JSON output. A run with a bogus key reaches the SDK's own auth gate and returns `code 2 / SmartSpectra authentication failed` in ~1s, writing a complete result file. - Not verified: anything past auth. `metricsPackets`, `accumulatedMetrics`, and the validation histogram are unmeasured until a real key exists. ## What it does `spectra-file.mjs` opens a file instead of a camera and counts what the SDK thinks of each frame: | field | meaning | |---|---| | `validation` | histogram of `ValidationCode` names over the whole clip (`kNoFaceFound`, `kTooDark`, `kFaceNotCentered`, ...) | | `hints` | the SDK's own hint string per code, counted | | `metricsPackets` | number of decoded metric packets delivered | | `accumulated` | the end-of-session accumulated packet, decoded | | `statusHistory` | processing status transitions with times | ## Run it ```bash npm i @smartspectra/node-sdk@3.4.0 SMARTSPECTRA_API_KEY=sk-... node spectra-file.mjs clip.mp4 --label baseline ``` Options: `--start ms` `--duration ms` `--interframe ms` `--transform 0..5` `--metrics breathing|cardio|face|micromotion|eda|all` `--timeout sec` `--json path`. ## Degradation set `make-variants.sh clip.mp4 variants` produces six comparable copies: 1. `-orig` re-encoded once (same codec path for everything below) 2. `-crop50` centre 50% crop, scaled back up 3. `-dim40` brightness −0.35 4. `-lowres` 320px wide, scaled back up 5. `-crf40` heavy compression 6. `-fps7` half frame rate Then, per variant: ```bash for f in variants/*.mp4; do SMARTSPECTRA_API_KEY=sk-... node spectra-file.mjs "$f" --label "$(basename "$f")" done ``` The interesting column is not the pulse number. It is which `ValidationCode` takes over as the input degrades, and at which point the SDK stops emitting metrics entirely. That tells a builder what their capture rig actually needs to guarantee, before they promise a user a reading. ## Notes - `frameTransform` is applied by the SDK to every frame; use it when the file's rotation metadata is not honoured, not to "fix" a cropped clip. - `interframeDelayMs 0` runs as fast as the machine allows. Leave it at 0 for measurement, raise it only to imitate real-time capture. - Each `metrics` buffer is left undecoded on purpose; only the accumulated packet is decoded, because that is the comparable summary across variants.
spectra-file.mjs
#!/usr/bin/env node
// spectra-file.mjs — run SmartSpectra over a video FILE, headless, no camera.
//
// Why: @smartspectra/node-sdk is built around a live camera. This drives the
// useFile() path instead, keeps every validationStatus code, and writes one
// JSON per run so variants (original / cropped / dimmed / downscaled) can be
// compared on equal terms.
//
// Usage:
// SMARTSPECTRA_API_KEY=... node spectra-file.mjs clip.mp4 [flags]
//
// Flags:
// --start <ms> seek before playback (default 0)
// --duration <ms> stop after N ms of content (default: whole file)
// --interframe <ms> throttle between frames (default 0 = as fast as possible)
// --transform <n> 0 none, 1 rot90cw, 2 rot90ccw, 3 rot180, 4 mirrorH, 5 mirrorV
// --metrics <set> breathing | cardio | face | micromotion | eda | all (default breathing)
// --timeout
hard stop for waitUntilComplete (default 180)
// --json <path> write the result JSON here (default ./spectra-file-<basename>.json)
// --label <text> tag this run, e.g. "dim-40%"
//
// Written against @smartspectra/node-sdk 3.4.0 type declarations. NOT yet run
// against a valid API key: everything up to the auth boundary is real, the
// metrics column is unverified until a key exists.
