It’s not so much that the physical and performance characteristics make one type better than the other.  Most often, the choice is determined by design intent, lease life, job-site considerations and construction speed-to-completion.

Those who prefer Solid Hardwood flooring assert design and color control advantages via the job site finishing process, and the ability to refinish the floor multiple times during the lifetime of the floor as the key advantages.  However, design trends over the last decade have dictated a movement to wood floors with more character; rustic, textured, natural and reclaimed visuals not easily replicated during job site floor finishing.  Furthermore, if you start off with a prefinished Solid Hardwood floor that DOES have these unique characteristics, they will be sanded away during refinishing. Since it is rarely a good idea to glue ¾” Solid Hardwood flooring down to a concrete substrate, plywood must be affixed to the concrete so the Solid Hardwood flooring can be nailed down.  This process adds cost, requires an allocation in the construction time-line, and can raise floor finish levels (as much as 1 ½”) that interfere with case goods, baseboards and doorways to areas incorporating other kinds of floor finishes.

Engineered Hardwood flooring is available with veneer thicknesses (the top species wear layer applied to a plywood platform) ranging generally from 2mm-6mm.  The plywood platform itself is typically built in layers, each with the grain perpendicular to the next.  This construction process provides for dimensional stability in the event there are changing levels of atmospheric or substrate moisture. The thicker the veneer, the more times it can be sanded.  Typically, veneers 3mm and above can be sanded up to three times. Perhaps the most important question facing a design or facilities manager in this comparison is whether it’s likely that the floor will ever be refinished or maintained.  But that’s another blog for another day! Engineered Hardwood flooring is available in overall thicknesses ranging from 3/8” – 5/8”.  It can be glued directly to a concrete substrate, and can also be floated or nailed (stapled).   Engineered hardwood flooring is available in both traditional and character styles, stained and natural, and in almost any hardwood species.
