That is because we have furniture designed in the 1950s as well as furniture designed this year. Modern furniture refers to a period in time, the modernist movement, or modernism. Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This style does not change, it reflects the design of that movement. Contemporary furniture is a design of recent time, reflecting the style and design of the present day. Contemporary by definition means "existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time." Contemporary furniture often borrows styles from other eras, however it is designed in the present day.
