Thanks for your interest!Washi gives your glass doors a touch of the Orient. Westerners know the paper that Japanese artisans use to cover wooden shoji sliding doors and screens as rice paper, but that is something of a misnomer. The Japanese call the paper washi, and they make it from various plant fibers, only one of which is the rice stalk. Artisans traditionally use rice glue, however, to attach the paper to the wooden shoji frames. You can use a similar technique to glue washi to glass doors to give them an oriental appeal. If you don't have rice glue, mucilage makes the best substitute because it is water-soluble. Take the door down, if possible, and lay it on a pair of sawhorses. You can also glue washi on the door while it's hanging, but the procedure may be slightly more challenging. Measure the width of the door with a tape measure and purchase a roll of washi that is at least 2 inches wider than that measurement. Measure the length of the door and cut a piece of washi that is 2 to 4 inches longer with a utility knife.
The cut doesn't have to be exactly straight, because you'll trim the washi after you glue it. Spread a bead of rice glue, obtainable where you buy the washi, or mucilage around the perimeter of the door frame. If the door has glass panels, spread the glue around the frame of each panel. Avoid getting glue on the glass. Lay the top edge of the washi on the top frame of the door and unroll it. Allow the paper to hang over on all sides of the frame. Pull on it gently as you unroll it, but don't try to eliminate wrinkles completely. There's an easy way to do that after the glue dries. Push down on the edges to make sure that glue is bonding the paper to the door frame, then wait for the glue to dry, which takes from two to four hours, depending on the humidity. Trim the edges of the paper with a utility knife and rehang the door if you took it down. Fill a plant spray bottle with water and mist the washi. Start at the top and work your way down until all the paper is slightly moist. The paper will shrink as it dries.
