Troy Titheridge says the Timaru District Youth Council is looking for ideas and input from local young people. Timaru's Youth Council is ready to "go to the next level", its chairman says.The council, which has been revived after years of absence, has a logo, members and a budget. Council chairman Troy Titheridge says the 10-member council now wants the district's young people to contribute ideas for its initiatives, including through a new Timaru District Youth Council page on Facebook.The Geraldine High School Year 13 student said on Thursday the council's first mini-project would be a map of 101 activities to do in the Timaru District."We seek your input of activities you think deserve to be on a creative map of the region for you to do in your spare time with family and friends."Titheridge encourage local young people to post their recommendations on the council's Facebook page for activities to do in the district before the end of June.He suggested tramping on Little Mt Peel, visiting Caroline Bay and looking at the South Canterbury Museum's artifacts might be among the map's listings.
A beach clean-up could also be a fun way to get the district's young people involved with the youth council, Titheridge said, adding the group was in discussions with regional authority Environment Canterbury on the matter.Another group, which has been discussing establishing a youth centre in Timaru, said in April it was in discussions about a possible site lease.Titheridge believed it would be good for the youth council to approach the youth centre group. About 74 per cent of the 215 respondents to an online poll early in 2015 stated a Timaru youth council should not be created.However, Titheridge said there had been an increase in youth councils' influence in the region.Timaru District councillors voted in June 2015 to establish the council, and Titheridge said the council-appointed members had attended meetings, including one in Christchurch on social media and marketing.Timaru's adult councillors have raised concerns about the future of the district's population, which demographic projections suggest will shrink and age in coming decades.
Titheridge said Timaru District "holds a lot of appeal" for young people as a "back door to skiing or the sea, and rivers and mountains". However, he suggested more could be done to highlight the district's good points.Timaru District councillor Tony Brien, who was instrumental in setting up the youth council, suggested the group's new Facebook page could help.
