Aerial photo of SouthPark Mall (I've edited the original image for improved contrast and tonal balance). You can read plenty on this shopping center's history both in this PDF file, as well as at Wikipedia, which is where the following excerpt comes from:SouthPark Mall, located in Charlotte, opened on February 12, 1970 with three department stores and one million square feet. Located about five miles south of Uptown, in its namesake neighborhood at the corner of Sharon and Fairview Roads, the area was considered the outskirts of Charlotte at the time it opened; people were skeptical about a big shopping mall in the middle of pastureland. The mall was developed by the Belk and Ivey families, owners of the eponymous department stores, who jointly owned and operated the mall. The design of the shopping mall was starkly modernist, with an underground parking deck. The inspiration for the mall's original architecture reportedly was Dallas' NorthPark Center. After the flagship Belk and Ivey's stores, Sears was the third anchor store to join the mall.

A strip mall opened behind Sears in June of 1970 with a Colonial Stores grocery store (later a Big Star food market, then acquired by Harris Teeter in the 1980s) and the SouthPark Cinemas I & II.Mall history: 1970 - presentDeveloper: Belk and Ivey'sCurrent website: hereCurrent aerial viewInfo from WikipediaPrevious entries: 1, 2, 3 To see more posts, click on the monthly links in the "Archives" section of the sidebar. Marketing Director Andy Selesnik said at least 90 percent of the stores will be open for the event. "Dillard's won't be open, and some of the service-oriented stores, like for harcuts or eyeglasses, won't open," he said This is the second year the mall has opened at midnight, although last year, the decision was last-minute and only about 70 percent of the stores participated. Selesnik admits he was skeptical about the idea. "Then I sat at the concierge desk, watching people riding up the escalator at 2 a.m. like it was the week before Christmas," he said. In talking to shoppers, he learned many decided to make a midnight shopping trip over Thanksgiving dinner. "It's kind of like we extended their holiday," he said. "I think we're starting a new tradition for some families." Retailers competing for holiday gift dollars have gradually extended Black Friday hours -- where big box stores used to open at 5 a.m., they're now opening at midnight, or on Thanksgiving evening.

"People used to get up early to shop on Black Friday," Selesnik said. "Now they stay up late and go to bed at 5 a.m." He noticed a lot of families who traditionally see a movie on Thanksgiving hit the Cinemark Strongsville for a 10 p.m. show last year, then come out and started shopping. "It was amazing to see the line at Taco Bell at 3 a.m.," he said. RICHMOND, Va. – Shoppers who want to walk off their calories on Thanksgiving and pick up early deals will still find plenty of options at local malls. Though some retailers locally and nationally have started to push back against the recent trend of opening on Thanksgiving to help shoppers beat the Black Friday rush, many shops at malls will remain open Thanksgiving.

Many malls say they are closed officially, but they do offer support to the retailers who set their own hours. Chesterfield Towne Center will be open from 6 to 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving and reopen on Black Friday at 9 a.m. A mall representative said that individual merchants have the option to open earlier or stay open later. For example, anchor store J.C. Penny opens at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24.  On Black Friday, the mall reopens at 9 a.m. Regency Square won’t officially be open on Thanksgiving, but J.C. Penney’s opens at 3 p.m. and doesn’t close until 10 p.m. Black Friday. Short Pump Town Center isn’t officially open on Thanksgiving, though several retailers will be open. Dick’s Sporting Goods opens at 6 p.m. and stays open through Friday night, closing only from 2 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Check with retailers to determine hours. On Black Friday, the mall reopens from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Stony Point Fashion Park is officially closed on Thanksgiving, with the exception of Fleming’s Steakhouse, Cinebistro and Dick’s Sporting Goods – who will open at 6 p.m. and stay open through Friday, closing only from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. Friday.

Black Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Stony Point. Southpark Mall is officially closed, but not really. Individual retailers like Dick’s and J.C. Penney’s will be open the same hours as they are at the other malls. On Black Friday, Southpark opens at 6 a.m. and operates with extended hours. Virginia Center Commons will be open from 6 p.m. – 1 a.m. Thanksgiving Day and re-open on Black Friday from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. Extended hours will continue throughout the holiday shopping season. Willow Lawn Mall is closed but some retailers will be open. Old Navy opens at 4 p.m. and stays open until Black Friday evening. Retailers also have individual start times on Black Friday. Locally, Walmart, Dollar General, Walgreens, Big Lots and Bass Pro Shops have the longest hours Thanksgiving hours. Walmart stays open 24 hours, but their deals don’t start until later Thanksgiving day and again on Black Friday morning. Bass Pro will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving and will reopen on Black Friday, with hours from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
